Chapter 1 - The Signature

Damian’s phone kept vibrating long after there was nothing left for him to save.
One notification announced that his corporate credit line had been suspended.
Another informed him that his executive authorization had been revoked.
Then came the message that finally drained the color from his face.
DAMIAN CROSS — TERMINATED FOR CAUSE, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
He stared at the screen.
“No.”
His voice was barely audible.
Then louder.
“No.”
He looked toward the long conference table as if someone there might explain how an empire worth hundreds of millions of dollars could disappear in less than sixty minutes.
Nobody moved.
Nobody defended him.
Men who had laughed at his jokes ten minutes earlier suddenly found the polished floor fascinating.
Elena Voss stood near the windows with a white handkerchief pressed lightly against her split lip.
The blood had slowed.
Her expression had not changed.
Damian pointed at her.
“You can’t fire me.”
Elena lowered the handkerchief.
“I already did.”
“I built Cross Meridian.”
“You built it using capital from three subsidiaries owned by Voss Global Holdings.”
“That money was invested.”
“Yes.”
Elena took the document from Graham Price, chairman of the holding company.
“And investments come with ownership rights.”
Damian laughed bitterly.
“You think a piece of paper makes you powerful?”
Elena looked down at the signature she had just written.
“No.”
She met his eyes.
“The last twelve years made me powerful.”
Veronica stood near the door, still clutching her designer handbag.
The security officer blocking her exit had not moved.
“This is insane.”
Veronica looked around the room.
“Someone call the police.”
Elena’s gaze shifted toward her.
“For what?”
“For holding us here.”
“You aren’t being held.”
Elena nodded toward the security officer.
“He’s preventing you from removing company property.”
Veronica stiffened.
“I don’t have company property.”
Graham opened another folder.
“Actually, Ms. Hale, you do.”
Veronica blinked.
“What?”
Graham removed three photographs.
One showed Veronica entering Damian’s private records office after midnight.
Another showed her carrying two archive boxes.
The third showed her placing those boxes inside the trunk of a black Mercedes.
Damian’s face changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
He turned toward Veronica.
“What did you take?”
She stared at the photographs.
“I can explain.”
Damian stepped toward her.
“What did you take?”
“Back away from her.”
Elena’s voice stopped him instantly.
Damian spun around.
“You don’t get to order me around.”
Elena’s reply was quiet.
“I own the building you’re standing in.”
The room became silent again.
Graham slid another paper toward Elena.
“We located unauthorized transfers thirty-eight minutes ago.”
Damian froze.
Elena looked at the amount.
$27,400,000.
She raised her eyes.
“Damian.”
He said nothing.
“Where did twenty-seven million dollars go?”
“That has nothing to do with me.”
Graham turned the page.
The next document contained Damian’s digital authorization.
His signature.
His access code.
His biometric approval.
Damian’s mouth went dry.
“That’s fabricated.”
Elena watched him carefully.
“Then you won’t mind explaining it to federal investigators.”
For the first time since she had entered the room, Damian looked genuinely frightened.
He took one slow step backward.
Then another.
His eyes moved toward the side entrance.
The security officer noticed.
So did Elena.
“Don’t.”
Damian stopped.
Elena placed the papers on the table.
“You humiliated me because you thought I had no power.”
She moved closer.
“You insulted me because you thought nobody important would care.”
Another step.
“And when Veronica struck me, you laughed.”
Damian swallowed.
“You’re making this personal.”
“No.”
Elena’s eyes hardened.
“I’m making it accurate.”
A phone rang at the far end of the table.
Graham answered.
He listened for less than ten seconds.
Then his expression changed.
“What is it?”
Elena asked.
Graham slowly lowered the phone.
“The missing twenty-seven million wasn’t transferred to an offshore account.”
Damian stared at him.
Graham looked directly at Elena.
“It was transferred to someone inside Voss Global.”
May you like
And suddenly Elena understood.
Damian had not been stealing alone.
