Chapter 6 - The File He Stole

Police arrived within minutes.
Damian was already gone.
His abandoned car was discovered two blocks away with the driver’s door open and a shattered phone on the passenger seat.
There was no blood.
No weapon.
No sign of forced removal.
“He planned an escape route.”
Aaron said.
Elena stared at the security footage.
“Not this quickly.”
“He knew he might need one.”
“No.”
She pointed at the screen.
“Look at his face.”
Damian had entered the garage angry.
Then he had checked something on a small device.
His expression changed immediately.
Fear.
He ran.
“He saw something.”
Graham leaned closer.
“Can we enhance it?”
Aaron froze the frame.
The device in Damian’s hand was not his phone.
It was a small encrypted token.
Veronica recognized it.
“I’ve seen that.”
Everyone turned.
“Where?”
Elena asked.
“In his safe.”
“What did he call it?”
“He didn’t.”
Veronica swallowed.
“He said if everything ever went wrong, that thing would tell him where to go.”
Aaron looked at Elena.
“A contingency beacon.”
“Or instructions.”
Elena turned toward Margaret.
“What is the termination protocol?”
Margaret’s face became unreadable.
“Elena.”
“What is it?”
“Your mother created contingency files for senior executives.”
“Why?”
“In case someone inside the company became compromised.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
“What was in Damian’s?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I never had access.”
Margaret looked genuinely worried now.
“Only Evelyn did.”
“She’s been dead nine years.”
“Yes.”
“So who activated Damian’s token?”
Nobody answered.
That was the question none of them wanted to ask.
Graham opened the restored server map.
“The archive wasn’t fully deleted.”
“How much survived?”
“About eleven percent.”
“Find everything related to my mother.”
Graham searched.
One video file appeared.
The date stamp was eight days before Evelyn’s death.
Elena sat.
Her mother appeared on screen.
Thinner than Elena remembered.
Pale.
But unmistakably sharp-eyed.
“If you are watching this, then someone has activated the succession protocol.”
Elena stopped breathing.
Evelyn continued.
“Elena, I hope it’s you.”
Margaret looked away.
The recording continued.
“If it is, there are three things you need to know.”
“First, my illness was not an accident.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Second, the people responsible are connected to Voss Global.”
Margaret whispered.
“I told you.”
Evelyn leaned closer to the camera.
“Third, never trust the person who brings you this recording.”
Everyone in the room turned toward Margaret.
She went completely still.
Elena paused the video.
No one spoke.
Finally, Margaret whispered.
“She knew.”
Elena stood.
“Knew what?”
Margaret looked at the frozen image of her sister.
“That I betrayed her.”
Elena’s hand tightened around the chair.
“What did you do?”
Margaret’s face collapsed with twenty-three years of guilt.
“I told them where she would be.”
Elena stared at her aunt.
May you like
Margaret’s voice broke.
“I gave them your mother’s location the night they tried to kill her.”
