Chapter 16 - The Pen

Elena’s security team reached the apartment six minutes too late.

The front door showed no damage.

The alarm had never triggered.

The drawer was open.

The wooden box was empty.

Aaron swore.

Elena did not.

She simply stood in the middle of the room, thinking.

“They knew.”

Graham nodded.

“They knew before we did.”

“No.”

Elena turned toward him.

“They knew I would figure it out.”

Margaret looked around nervously.

“Then David has Atlas.”

“Not necessarily.”

Elena walked toward her desk.

She opened the bottom drawer and removed another wooden box.

Graham stared.

“What’s that?”

Elena opened it.

A fountain pen rested inside.

Margaret blinked.

“You had two?”

“No.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“My mother taught me never to store anything valuable where people expected it.”

She held up the pen.

“The one they stole was a replica.”

Aaron almost smiled.

“Your mother really did train you for this.”

Elena’s smile disappeared.

“Not enough.”

Graham examined the pen.

“There’s no visible key.”

Elena twisted the barrel.

Nothing.

She removed the ink cartridge.

Nothing.

Then she noticed tiny engraved numbers beneath the clip.

6.

7.

8.

Room 608.

“Of course.”

She pressed the clip three times.

The pen separated in the middle.

Inside was a narrow metallic cylinder.

Graham stared.

“That’s it.”

They returned to headquarters.

Graham inserted the cylinder into an isolated computer.

A password prompt appeared.

QUESTION: WHAT DID EVELYN PROTECT LAST?

Margaret whispered.

“Elena.”

Elena typed her own name.

Access denied.

She tried VOSS GLOBAL.

Denied.

She stared at the screen.

What did Evelyn protect last?

Her daughter?

Her company?

Her reputation?

Then Elena remembered the letter.

They learned early that people will abandon reason for someone they love.

Evelyn had spent her final weeks gathering evidence not for herself.

For everyone Meridian had harmed.

Elena typed one word.

TRUTH.

The screen opened.

Atlas filled the monitor.

Thousands of records.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Evidence stretching back thirty years.

Graham looked overwhelmed.

“This could destroy them.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“This could destroy hundreds of innocent people if released recklessly.”

She searched for David Voss.

One file appeared.

DAVID VOSS — STEWARD — ACTIVE.

Then she searched Damian.

DAMIAN CROSS — RECRUITED 2014 — UNKNOWING ASSET UNTIL 2021.

Elena frowned.

“He didn’t know at first.”

Margaret nodded.

“Most don’t.”

Elena opened Damian’s file.

Payments.

Instructions.

Blackmail.

Then one video.

Damian sat inside a restaurant three years earlier.

Across from him was David.

David’s face was finally visible.

Elena froze.

She knew him.

Not as family.

Not as an uncle.

As someone she had met dozens of times.

A respected philanthropist.

A major investor.

A man who had attended Evelyn’s funeral.

Jonathan Mercer.

Graham whispered.

“My God.”

Elena stared.

Jonathan Mercer controlled one of the largest private equity firms in America.

He sat on charity boards.

He donated to hospitals.

He appeared on television discussing ethics in business.

And he had known Elena since she was seventeen.

Her phone rang.

Jonathan’s familiar voice greeted her.

“Well done.”

Elena’s hand tightened.

“You stole the wrong pen.”

He laughed.

“That sounds like something your mother would do.”

“You lost.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“You found Atlas.”

“That means the game finally begins.”

A security alarm erupted through headquarters.

Aaron checked his tablet.

“Fire on level thirty-two.”

Another alarm.

Then another.

Graham stared at the system.

“Multiple floors.”

Elena immediately understood.

“Evacuate.”

Aaron moved.

Margaret looked horrified.

“He’s burning the building.”

Elena stared at Atlas.

“No.”

She began copying the archive to an encrypted drive.

“He’s burning the evidence.”

Smoke started rising through the ventilation shafts.

And somewhere below them, an explosion shook Voss Global Tower.
