Chapter 7 - Margaret’s Confession

Elena wanted to hate Margaret immediately.

It would have been easier.

Instead, she felt nothing.

A cold emptiness settled behind her ribs.

“Why?”

Margaret sat slowly.

“I was thirty-two.”

“I owed money.”

“To whom?”

“People I didn’t understand.”

“You sold my mother’s location for money?”

“No.”

Margaret looked up.

“They threatened your grandfather.”

Elena’s expression changed.

“He was already sick.”

“Exactly.”

“They controlled his medication supplier.”

Margaret rubbed her hands together.

“They told me they only wanted to frighten Evelyn.”

“And you believed them?”

“I wanted to.”

Elena laughed without humor.

“So you gave them her hotel.”

“Yes.”

“Room number?”

“Yes.”

“Schedule?”

Margaret nodded.

Elena looked away before rage could overtake her.

“What happened?”

“They sabotaged the elevator.”

Graham frowned.

“I remember that accident.”

“Evelyn survived.”

Margaret continued.

“Afterward, she knew someone close to her had betrayed her.”

“You never confessed?”

“I did.”

Elena turned.

“When?”

“Two days later.”

Margaret’s eyes were wet.

“She slapped me.”

“Good.”

“She also forgave me.”

“I don’t.”

“I’m not asking you to.”

Elena returned to the video.

“Play it.”

Evelyn’s image moved again.

“Margaret made a terrible choice.”

Elena’s face tightened.

“She told my enemies where to find me.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“But Margaret is not the person you should fear most.”

Elena glanced at her.

The video continued.

“The organization operates through ownership layers.”

“They do not conquer companies.”

“They place people inside them.”

“They wait.”

“They influence hiring.”

“They influence boards.”

“They influence debt.”

“And eventually, they own decisions without owning shares.”

Graham looked disturbed.

Evelyn reached toward the camera.

“I called them Meridian.”

Damian’s company name.

Elena froze.

Cross Meridian.

She looked toward Graham.

“Damian named his company after them.”

Margaret nodded grimly.

“He didn’t invent Meridian.”

“He inherited it.”

Evelyn continued.

“If Cross Meridian exists when you see this, assume they have reached you.”

Elena stopped the recording.

“How long has Damian been inside Voss?”

Graham checked.

“His first contract was eleven years ago.”

Two years before Evelyn died.

Elena’s stomach turned.

He had not stumbled into her world.

He had been placed there.

Veronica whispered.

“He knew who you were.”

Elena looked at her.

“What?”

“When Damian first saw you tonight.”

Veronica’s breathing quickened.

“He acted surprised.”

“He made that joke about your dress.”

“He called you an expense.”

“Yes.”

“But before that, he whispered something.”

“What?”

“I didn’t think it mattered.”

Elena stepped closer.

“What did he say?”

Veronica swallowed.

“He said, ‘She finally came herself.’”

The room changed.

Damian had recognized Elena from the beginning.

The humiliation had not been spontaneous.

It had been provocation.

“Why provoke me?”

Elena asked.

Graham looked toward the succession files.

“To make you angry enough to exercise full control.”

Margaret’s face went pale.

“And trigger Evelyn’s protocol.”

Elena understood.

Damian had wanted her signature.

Not because it fired him.

Because it unlocked something.

Graham suddenly started typing.

“Oh, no.”

“What?”

“The succession protocol didn’t only consolidate your shares.”

He turned the screen.

“It opened Evelyn’s sealed acquisition archive.”

A list of confidential assets appeared.

Energy networks.

Medical manufacturers.

Defense contractors.

Satellite infrastructure.

Billions in dormant holdings.

Elena whispered.

“That’s what they wanted.”

Then Aaron entered quickly.

“We found Damian.”

“Where?”

“He used a Voss Global aircraft.”

Elena stared at him.

“That’s impossible.”

“He had an emergency authorization.”

“Destination?”

Aaron looked at the flight record.

“Geneva.”

Margaret’s face drained of color.

Elena noticed.

“What’s in Geneva?”

May you like

Margaret whispered two words.

“The original Meridian.”
