Chapter Ten: The Verdict

The criminal trials began eight months later.

By then, Amelia could sit upright, laugh loudly, and grab Marcus’s tie whenever he visited.

Khloe had returned to work part-time. Her nonprofit had survived the scandal after an independent audit proved that every accusation against her had been fabricated.

Donations increased.

Families who had once known Khloe only as Marcus Thorne’s wife began to recognize her as the leader she had always been.

Isabella accepted a plea agreement shortly before trial.

She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, and participating in the falsification of medical evidence. Her cooperation reduced her sentence, but it did not erase it.

At sentencing, she asked to speak.

“I became obsessed with a life I believed had been promised to me,” she said. “I blamed Khloe because admitting the truth would have meant recognizing that Marcus had never chosen me.”

Khloe listened without expression.

Isabella turned toward her.

“I am sorry.”

Khloe did not answer.

An apology could be sincere and still arrive too late to deserve access to the person it harmed.

Vivian refused every plea offer.

She went to trial claiming she had merely tried to protect her son and grandchild.

The jury saw the files.

They heard the recordings.

They read the custody plan and the false medical reports.

They convicted her on multiple counts, including conspiracy, fraud, witness tampering, and unlawful administration of medication.

Lorenzo Rossi received a separate sentence for financial crimes and obstruction.

Dr. Crane lost his medical license permanently.

Daniel Price was sentenced after admitting that he had sold confidential information and attempted to plant fraudulent financial records.

When the final verdict was announced, reporters surrounded Khloe outside the courthouse.

“How does it feel to win?” one asked.

Khloe looked at Amelia sleeping in Elias’s arms.

“This was never about winning,” she said. “It was about making sure the truth became stronger than the people trying to bury it.”

Across the steps, Marcus stood quietly.

He had spent the previous months working with investigators and rebuilding the remaining pieces of Thorne Global as a smaller employee-owned company.

He no longer lived in a mansion.

He drove himself.

He attended counseling.

He never missed an agreed visit with Amelia.

Most importantly, he never pressured Khloe to return.

That evening, he brought Amelia home after their scheduled afternoon together.

Khloe opened the door.

“She ate?” Khloe asked.

“Everything except the peas.”

“She likes peas.”

“She likes throwing peas.”

“That sounds more accurate.”

Marcus handed her the diaper bag.

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

Khloe waited.

“I’ve been offered a permanent position with the company’s new ethics foundation.”

“That sounds almost suspiciously appropriate.”

He smiled faintly.

“I deserved that.”

“What will you do?”

“Help employees report misconduct without answering to executives.”

Khloe looked at him.

“You’re good with Amelia.”

“She makes it easy.”

“No. She doesn’t. She screamed for forty minutes last Thursday.”

Marcus’s smile grew.

“I deserved that too.”

Khloe laughed before she could stop herself.

The sound surprised them both.

But neither tried to turn it into more than it was.

Trust was not rebuilt in dramatic declarations.

It returned in small moments that survived the truth.
