Chapter Nine: The Name on the Bracelet

The baby arrived five weeks later during a summer thunderstorm.

Khloe’s labor began shortly after midnight. Elias drove her to the hospital while Marcus followed in another car.

He waited outside the delivery room until Khloe asked for him.

When he entered, he looked terrified.

“Don’t make me comfort you,” she said through a painful breath.

Marcus nodded quickly.

“I’ll be quiet.”

“You’ve never been good at that.”

For the first time in months, they both laughed.

The moment passed, but it mattered.

Hours later, their daughter was born healthy.

When the nurse placed the baby in Khloe’s arms, the world seemed to become still.

The fear, the surveillance, the courtroom, the lies—none of it disappeared.

But it moved farther away.

Marcus stood beside the bed with tears in his eyes.

“She’s beautiful,” he whispered.

Khloe looked down at the hospital bracelet.

The name read:

AMELIA ELISE THORNE-BENNETT

Marcus noticed the two surnames.

He nodded.

“She should carry the name of the family that protected her too.”

Khloe looked at him carefully.

“You’re not angry?”

“No.”

“You would have been once.”

“I was wrong about many things once.”

Elias entered a few minutes later. When he saw his surname on the bracelet, he turned toward the window to hide his emotion.

Khloe smiled.

“Uncle Elias.”

He cleared his throat.

“Yes?”

“Would you like to hold your grandniece?”

He accepted the baby as though receiving something sacred.

Marcus watched from the other side of the room.

He did not feel replaced.

He felt grateful that Khloe and Amelia had someone who would never ask them to remain quiet for the sake of an empire.

Later, while Amelia slept, Khloe spoke privately with Marcus.

“I rented a house near the hospital.”

Marcus nodded. “Elias told me.”

“I won’t return to the estate.”

“I sold it.”

She looked surprised.

“What?”

“The estate is being converted into a residential center for mothers and children leaving dangerous homes.”

Khloe stared at him.

“That was your family’s house for four generations.”

“That is exactly why it needed a different purpose.”

For a moment, she saw the man she had believed Marcus could become when she married him.

But she was no longer willing to love potential more than reality.

“I’m still filing for legal separation,” she said.

“I know.”

“I need to understand who I am without your family surrounding me.”

“I understand.”

“You may visit Amelia according to the schedule we agreed on.”

“Thank you.”

Marcus walked to the door.

“Marcus?”

He turned.

Khloe looked down at their sleeping daughter.

“Don’t waste the second chance she’s giving you.”

May you like

His voice was quiet.

“I won’t.”
