Chapter Three: The Agreement

Marcus had spent his entire life believing his mother’s silence meant strength.
That night, it looked like guilt.
Vivian asked to speak privately, but Elias refused to allow anyone involved in the incident to leave the secured floor.
“You’re treating us like criminals,” she protested.
“A patient was assaulted inside my hospital,” Elias said. “Until the police arrive, everyone remains available.”
“The police?”
Isabella’s voice cracked.
Raymond nodded. “They’ve already been contacted.”
Vivian took Marcus’s arm.
“Please. We need to handle this as a family.”
Marcus pulled away.
“Khloe is my family.”
Vivian’s expression tightened.
“She has always encouraged you to turn against us.”
“No. She encouraged me to think for myself.”
A police detective arrived minutes later with two uniformed officers. After reviewing the footage, they separated Isabella from the others.
Her attorney arrived shortly afterward, speaking urgently into his phone.
As Isabella was escorted away for formal questioning, she looked over her shoulder at Vivian.
“You promised me this would be clean.”
Marcus heard every word.
So did the detective.
Vivian’s face lost its remaining color.
Marcus followed her into an empty consultation room. Elias entered behind them and closed the door.
“What did she mean?” Marcus demanded.
Vivian sat slowly.
“You have to understand that everything I did was to protect the family.”
“That sentence has excused every cruel thing you’ve ever done.”
“Your marriage was destroying the company’s reputation.”
“My marriage improved it.”
“Khloe was never prepared for our world.”
“She runs a successful nonprofit and raised millions for pediatric care. She handled your world better than you ever treated her.”
Vivian looked toward Elias.
“This is private.”
“Khloe is my niece,” he said. “Nothing concerning her safety is private from me tonight.”
Marcus placed both hands on the table.
“Tell me the truth.”
Vivian’s composure finally cracked.
Two years earlier, Thorne Global had been close to losing a major European expansion deal. The Rossi family controlled the investment group capable of saving it. Isabella’s father had demanded influence in return.
Vivian offered something more personal.
She promised that Marcus’s marriage would not last.
She convinced the Rossis that Khloe would eventually accept a financial settlement and disappear. Isabella would then return to Marcus’s life publicly, repairing both the business alliance and the families’ social standing.
Marcus stared at his mother in disbelief.
“You negotiated my marriage?”
“I negotiated a solution.”
“Khloe was pregnant.”
“That complicated matters.”
The coldness of the words stunned even Elias.
Vivian rushed to explain.
“We never intended to harm the child. Isabella was supposed to convince Khloe to leave after the baby was born. Khloe would receive enough money to live comfortably.”
“You planned to take my child from her.”
“The baby is a Thorne.”
“The baby is hers.”
Vivian’s voice hardened.
“Do you think courts hand powerful families to women with no financial influence?”
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What were you planning to accuse her of?”
Vivian looked away.
That was answer enough.
Elias leaned forward.
“Medical instability?”
Vivian remained silent.
Marcus remembered the private therapist his mother had recommended. The supplements delivered to Khloe without labels. The repeated comments about pregnancy hormones. The stories Vivian had told donors about Khloe being fragile.
It had not been concern.
It had been preparation.
“You were building a case,” Marcus said.
Vivian began to cry.
But Marcus no longer trusted tears.
“Where is the agreement?”
“There is no agreement.”
Elias placed a folder on the table.
“Then you won’t mind us examining the documents Isabella’s attorney tried to remove from her car.”
May you like
Vivian stared at the folder.
For the first time that night, she looked defeated.
