Chapter Eight: The Hearing

Three weeks later, Khloe entered the courthouse through a private entrance.

Her doctors had approved limited travel. She moved carefully, supported by Elias on one side and Detective Ortiz on the other.

Marcus waited near the courtroom doors.

He did not approach until Khloe nodded.

“You don’t have to testify today,” he said.

“Yes, I do.”

Isabella’s attorney had argued that the hospital footage lacked context. He claimed Khloe had provoked the confrontation through months of jealousy and hostility.

Khloe refused to let another man rewrite what happened.

Inside the courtroom, Isabella sat behind the defense table in a plain navy suit. Without designer clothes, cameras, and family influence, she looked smaller.

But Khloe did not mistake smallness for innocence.

When called to the stand, Khloe spoke clearly.

She described the months of manipulation.

The exhaustion caused by the hidden medication.

The therapist’s false notes.

Vivian’s constant efforts to make her doubt herself.

Then she described the hospital suite.

She did not exaggerate.

She did not need to.

The video spoke for itself.

Isabella’s attorney stood for cross-examination.

“Mrs. Thorne, isn’t it true that you disliked my client long before this incident?”

“Yes.”

“Because you believed she wanted your husband?”

“No. Because she told me she wanted my husband.”

Several people in the gallery reacted.

The attorney frowned.

“You were under significant emotional pressure during pregnancy, correct?”

“I was under pressure because your client and her accomplices were secretly drugging, monitoring, and framing me.”

The prosecutor objected to the attorney’s tone. The judge sustained it.

The attorney tried another approach.

“You struck the marble table after my client pushed you. Is it possible she believed you were preparing to attack her?”

Khloe looked at Isabella.

“She walked toward me while I was on the floor.”

The attorney paused.

Khloe continued.

“She looked at the door first. She wanted to make sure no one was coming.”

The courtroom became silent.

“And then she attacked me again.”

The attorney had no useful response.

Later that afternoon, the judge ordered Isabella held pending trial, citing the severity of the assault, the conspiracy evidence, and the risk of witness intimidation.

Vivian was denied bail in a separate hearing.

Lorenzo Rossi was charged with financial crimes and obstruction.

Daniel Price and Dr. Crane both agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Outside the courthouse, Khloe found Marcus standing alone near the steps.

“You did well,” he said.

“I told the truth.”

“That’s what I meant.”

She studied him for a moment.

“You testified against your mother.”

“Yes.”

“Was it difficult?”

“It was necessary.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Marcus looked toward the courthouse doors.

“Yes,” he said. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

Khloe nodded.

Then she walked past him.

After several steps, she stopped.

“The doctors expect the baby to arrive in about six weeks.”

Marcus’s breath caught.

“I know.”

“You may attend the birth.”

He did not smile. He understood it was not reconciliation.

It was trust offered in its smallest possible form.

“Thank you,” he said.

Khloe continued toward the car.

For the first time since the hospital, she did not feel that Marcus was following her.

She felt that he was finally learning to stand on his own.
