Chapter 15 - THE NAME ON THE ACCOUNT

I spoke the command into Tony's laptop.
"Account Seventeen. Override Lantern. Return to harbor."
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then the cargo ship's lights flashed twice. Its engines slowed. The bow turned toward shore.
Every federal server recorded my voice using the account that had financed years of crimes.
Brooks looked at me. "That command will be used against you."
"Good."
The ship was boarded before sunrise. Agents found records, buyers' names, forged adoption papers, and enough evidence to dismantle networks in five states.
They also found two children hidden in a locked medical cabin.
Both survived.
At the hospital, Elena asked why police were standing outside my room.
"Because I did bad things before I did the right thing," I told her.
She considered that with the serious expression children use when adults finally stop lying.
"Are you going to jail?"
"Probably."
"But you saved us."
"That does not erase everything else."
Bruno rested his head on her blanket. Elena scratched behind his ear.
"Then tell the truth," she said. "All of it."
So I did.
I gave Brooks names, routes, accounts, and recordings. I admitted to racketeering, illegal gambling, extortion, and every order I had signed. I did not ask for immunity.
Tony did the same.
Tomas wanted to thank me. I told him to save the thanks for Bruno.
The grand jury hearings began under sealed protection. Enzo's lawyers attacked Elena's memory. Harlan claimed she had imagined everything while drugged.
Then Marisol identified every guard and buyer.
Dr. Fallon confessed.
Raines pleaded guilty.
Marco, recovering under guard, agreed to testify.
The case grew stronger each day.
But three nights before Elena was scheduled to appear, someone mailed Rosa a photograph of her daughter leaving the hospital.
On the back were five words.
