Chapter 5 - THE DEBT THAT BOUGHT A CHILD

Tomas was no longer in Elena's room.

His chair was empty. The bathroom window stood open, though we were five floors above the street.

Rosa stared at the empty space where her husband had been. "He went for coffee."

Security footage showed Tomas entering an elevator with a man dressed as an orderly. The orderly held a phone against his side. On its screen was a live image of Rosa sitting beside Elena.

Tomas had gone quietly to protect them.

His forty-two-thousand-dollar debt had never been about restaurant repairs. Marco had pushed loans through my neighborhood businesses, then altered the agreements. Late fees became leverage. Leverage became ownership. Harlan used desperate families as doors.

I had allowed men like Marco to collect in my name.

That truth belonged to me.

Detective Brooks wanted Elena moved to a federal safe location. I agreed, but only after Bruno inspected the ambulance, the drivers, and every equipment cabinet. No one argued with the dog anymore.

Tony and I traced the photograph's background to an abandoned cold-storage facility near Newtown Creek. Enzo had once used it for imported food shipments.

"You stay here," Brooks ordered.

"They asked for my presence."

"They asked for the child."

"Which means they expect me to bring her. I can give them a better target."

We placed a tracker inside Elena's stuffed bunny and sent an empty pediatric transport van toward the warehouse. I rode in the back, hidden behind a false medical partition. Tony drove. Brooks followed from two blocks away with an unmarked team.

At the warehouse, Marco opened the loading door.

He looked exhausted, his suit torn, his confidence gone.

"Where is Elena?"

"Where is Tomas?"

A scream echoed from inside.

Marco glanced over his shoulder. "You do not understand what Enzo built. Harlan is only the buyer."

"Buyer of what?"

"People. Routes. Judges. Police. Anyone with a price."

Tony shifted beside me.

Marco saw the movement and raised a gun.

Bruno burst from the front cabin and drove him sideways. The gun skidded under a pallet.

Then the warehouse lights snapped on.

Rows of refrigerated trucks surrounded us.

Every truck carried my company seal.

And from the darkness above, my uncle's voice said, "Welcome home, Luca.
