Chapter 16 - THE COURTHOUSE GHOST
Only court employees, lawyers, marshals, and protected witnesses knew Elena's hearing date.
Someone inside the building was still working for Enzo.
Brooks moved the Vasquez family to a new safe house and replaced the entire security detail. Bruno went with Elena. The dog slept across her doorway like a living barricade.
I entered the courthouse wearing federal chains.
Reporters shouted my name. Cameras flashed. For years, men had stepped aside when I walked into rooms. Now marshals guided me through a side entrance.
It felt honest.
The threat card used stationery from Judge Malcolm Vale's chambers. Vale had approved sealed warrants during Carlo's investigation and later dismissed three missing-child cases for lack of evidence.
He was also scheduled to preside over Enzo's first hearing.
Brooks searched his chambers while Vale argued from the bench. Inside a locked drawer, agents found burner phones and a list of protected addresses.
Vale ran.
He made it as far as the records basement before Bruno blocked the stairwell.
Elena had been brought through a secure tunnel for her video testimony. Bruno smelled the same chemical on Vale's shoes that had been used in the funeral home sedation room.
Vale raised a fire extinguisher at the dog.
Elena stepped from behind the marshal.
"He was there," she said.
Vale's face collapsed.
He had not injected her, but he had watched Dr. Fallon sign the false certificate. He had arranged the funeral director's payment and guaranteed Marco that no court would investigate.
"I never touched the child," he insisted.
Elena looked at him steadily. "You closed the door."
Those four words ended his career.
Vale was arrested in front of his own courtroom.
The hearing continued under another judge. Elena testified by video with Bruno beside her. She described the van, the silver ring, Marco, Enzo, and the needle.
The defense asked whether a seven-year-old could truly remember so much.
Elena held up her purple sneaker.
"I remember because they took the other one," she said.
Then the prosecutor played a recovered recording from Judge Vale's phone.

The voice belonged to a woman sitting in the courtroom audience.
