Chapter 2 - THE SECOND DEATH

The SUV smashed through the funeral home's side gate just as the paramedics arrived.
Two men in dark jackets jumped out. One raised a pistol toward the open coffin.
"Down!" Tony yelled.
I pulled Rosa behind a row of chairs. Tomas threw himself over Elena while the paramedics dragged the stretcher forward. Bruno launched across the room, forcing the gunman to turn. The shot shattered a wall lamp instead of reaching the child.
My men returned fire into the ceiling and doorway, driving the attackers back without hitting the families trapped inside. The second man grabbed his partner and ran. The SUV tore away with one rear window broken.
I memorized the plate.
Marco used the chaos to crawl toward the kitchen hall.
Bruno saw him.
The dog's growl stopped him cold.
"Please," Marco said. "I can help her."
"You already helped put her in a coffin."
The paramedics found a pulse, faint but steady. One of them shone a light into Elena's eyes.
"She's heavily sedated. We need to move now."
I rode with the ambulance because Rosa could not stop shaking and Tomas looked ready to kill the first person who spoke. Bruno followed in Tony's car.
At St. Catherine's Hospital, doctors rushed Elena behind double doors. Security sealed the pediatric floor after I told them someone had just tried to finish the job.
A detective named Dana Brooks arrived twenty minutes later. She did not care about my reputation or the men in suits outside the room.
"You will give me the underboss," she said.
"You can have him when Elena is safe."
"That is not how this works."
"Tonight, it is."
She stepped closer. "A child was declared dead, placed in a coffin, and nearly shot at her own funeral. If you hide one fact from me, I will treat you as part of it."
I believed her.
So I told her about Marco's lie, Harlan's car, and Elena witnessing a pickup connected to business I had forbidden.
The doctor emerged before Brooks could answer.
"Elena is alive," he said. "But someone gave her a powerful paralytic and sedative. It slowed her breathing until it was almost impossible to detect without proper equipment."
Rosa covered her mouth.
The doctor handed Brooks a clear evidence bag containing a small blue plastic cap.
"We found this caught inside her sleeve. It came from an injection needle."
Brooks studied it. "Hospital issue?"
"No. Veterinary supply."
Bruno, waiting at the end of the hall, suddenly stood and stared at the elevator.

The doors opened.
A man in medical scrubs stepped out carrying a syringe.
