Chapter 5 - WHAT NATHAN KNEW

Claire replayed the clip three times.
Nathan stood in the garage while Vanessa held the fake belly and Mercer carried the blood bag. He said something the camera could not record. Then he turned and left.
“He knew,” Claire whispered.
Ethan zoomed in. “We do not know what he knew.”
“He saw enough.”
The betrayal hollowed her voice.
For years, Claire had defended Nathan against his family’s reputation. She had helped refinance failing divisions, negotiated labor disputes, and stood beside him when the press called him an entitled heir.
Now he had seen proof of Vanessa’s deception and still accused Claire publicly.
Ethan checked the clip’s timestamp against Nathan’s phone records. Two minutes after leaving the garage, Nathan called his uncle, Victor Moretti, chairman of Moretti Global.
The call lasted eleven minutes.
Victor had always opposed Claire’s influence. He believed she made Nathan too cautious and refused to let the company buy distressed properties through political pressure.
“They are using Vanessa to remove you,” Ethan said.
“Why would Nathan agree?”
“Control. Fear. Or blackmail.”
Claire gave a humorless laugh. “You’re searching for a version of him that is still decent.”
“No. I’m searching for the full crime.”
Dana called with another discovery. The blood on Mercer’s bag came from a pregnant patient at St. Catherine’s Clinic. The sample had been stolen during routine testing.
The patient’s records were accessed using Mercer’s credentials.
Claire’s anger sharpened. “They used another woman’s blood to stage a miscarriage.”
Ethan nodded. “And if they staged a miscarriage, they no longer need a baby.”
“Unless the loss is temporary.”
They both understood at once.
Vanessa could become “pregnant” again after reconciling with Nathan, then present an infant obtained through adoption, trafficking, or a paid surrogate.
Ethan searched Bellweather Consulting’s encrypted files.
One folder was labeled DELIVERY.
Inside was a photograph of a frightened young pregnant woman standing outside a rural clinic.
Below it was a date.
