Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT AT LAKE GEORGE

At three, Ethan fired through the ceiling—not at the men, but at the sprinkler pipe.
Water exploded into the hallway, triggering the property alarm and exterior floodlights. The armed men hesitated.
That was enough.
Ethan pushed a bookcase against the front door and led Claire and Lily through a narrow laundry exit.
They crossed the wet lawn as Julian shouted behind them.
Lily could barely walk. Claire wrapped one arm around her waist while Ethan returned fire into the dirt to force the attackers back.
A county patrol car appeared at the end of the road, siren screaming.
Julian fled into the woods. One gunman surrendered. The other crashed the SUV into a stone wall.
Lily was rushed to the hospital, where doctors stopped the early labor.
The captured man identified himself as Owen Price, a former Moretti Global contractor. He claimed Victor Moretti ordered the operation.
But he also said something unexpected.
“Nathan didn’t know about the girl.”
Claire stared through the interview-room glass. “He is protecting Nathan.”
“Maybe,” Ethan said. “Or Nathan was trapped after the garage.”
Owen explained that Nathan had followed Vanessa into the garage and discovered the fake belly. Victor arrived by phone and threatened to expose Nathan’s drunken night with Vanessa as assault unless he cooperated.
Vanessa had secretly drugged Nathan at the charity auction and filmed him unconscious in her hotel room. Carefully edited footage made him look violent.
Nathan believed a public accusation would destroy Claire along with him.
“So he chose to destroy me first,” Claire said.
Ethan did not defend him.
Rachel called from New York.
Federal agents had raided Doctor Mercer’s clinic.
Mercer was missing.
So was every original file connected to Vanessa.
Then the hospital hallway television switched to breaking news.
Vanessa stood before cameras in a black mourning dress.
She announced that Claire had murdered her unborn child.
Beside her stood Nathan.

And he was holding divorce papers.
