Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

The woman’s name was Lily Grant, twenty-two, unmarried, and eight months pregnant.
She had responded to an online advertisement promising housing and medical care for expectant mothers considering adoption. The program was funded by Bellweather Consulting.
Ethan and Claire drove north to a private residence near Lake George.
They found Lily alone in a locked guesthouse.
“I’m not allowed to leave without a driver,” she said. “They said it protects the baby.”
“Who is adopting?” Claire asked.
Lily looked down. “A married couple. I never met them.”
She had signed documents she did not understand. Her phone was taken each night. Doctor Mercer supervised her care through video calls.
Then Lily revealed the final detail.
“They told me the baby’s birthday has to be changed on the certificate.”
Claire felt sick.
Vanessa planned to disappear after her staged miscarriage, return months later, and claim the infant was born early in secret. With Mercer falsifying records, Nathan could be presented as the father.
Claire contacted attorney Rachel Monroe, a former federal prosecutor. Rachel arranged emergency protection for Lily and alerted state investigators.
But before deputies arrived, headlights swept across the guesthouse windows.
Julian Hale stepped from a black SUV with two armed men.
Ethan locked the door. “Back room. Now.”
Claire moved Lily behind a heavy dresser while Ethan killed the lights.
Julian pounded on the front entrance.
“Lily, open the door. We know you have visitors.”
The first gunshot shattered the porch light.
Ethan drew his licensed pistol but kept it lowered.
“We need them alive,” Claire whispered.
“We need us alive first.”
A second shot broke the kitchen window.
Glass sprayed across the floor.
Then Lily gasped and grabbed Claire’s wrist.
“My water just broke.”

Outside, Julian began counting down from five.
