Chapter 1 – The Butterfly Mark

Margaret Bennett stumbled backward as if the ground beneath her had disappeared.
The ballroom fell silent.
Her trembling hand reached toward the butterfly-shaped birthmark on Emily's shoulder, but she stopped inches away.
"No..." she whispered. "Only one child in this world has that mark."
Daniel stepped between them, wrapping his torn suit jacket around Emily's shoulders.
"My mother has humiliated my wife enough," he said coldly. "We're leaving."
"Daniel, wait!"
Margaret's voice cracked with desperation.
"That birthmark... it belonged to my daughter."
Every guest froze.
Emily looked at her in disbelief.
"You don't have a daughter."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I did."
Forty-two years earlier, Margaret had given birth to twin girls.
One had survived.
The other had supposedly died during a devastating hospital fire only hours after delivery.
The doctors showed her paperwork.
The nurses offered condolences.
Her husband convinced her to move on.
She had mourned that baby every day of her life.
Only one thing had never left her memory.
A tiny butterfly-shaped birthmark resting on the baby's left shoulder.
Exactly where Emily carried hers.
Emily's breathing became uneven.
"My adoption records say I was abandoned outside St. Catherine's Children's Home."
Margaret's face turned white.
St. Catherine's.
The same hospital where her newborn daughter had supposedly died.

Someone had lied.
And someone had stolen a child.
