Chapter 2 – Buried Truths

The wedding was forgotten.

Within hours Daniel hired the country's most respected forensic investigator.

Old hospital archives were recovered.

Boxes covered in decades of dust were opened.

Most files had mysteriously disappeared.

But one retired nurse, eighty-three-year-old Eleanor Brooks, agreed to speak.

She arrived carrying a faded leather journal she had hidden for over forty years.

"I've waited my whole life for someone to ask," she said quietly.

Inside the journal were handwritten notes from the night of the fire.

There had never been a second infant death.

Instead, two powerful businessmen had bribed a corrupt hospital administrator to falsify the records.

Margaret's late husband, Charles Bennett, had been drowning in debt.

Another wealthy couple had desperately wanted a child.

Charles accepted the money.

He allowed their newborn daughter to disappear.

Margaret never knew.

The adoptive couple loved Emily deeply.

But they died in a car accident when she was only six years old.

She eventually entered foster care before being adopted again by a kind schoolteacher who raised her with honesty and compassion.

Emily looked down at the journal with tears in her eyes.

"My parents never stole me."

"No," Eleanor replied.

"They rescued you after the people who bought you abandoned everything to save themselves."

Daniel slowly turned toward the large portrait of his late father hanging in the Bennett estate.

His father had known.

The entire family fortune had been built upon a lie.
