Chapter 12 - THE CHAPEL RECORDING

Khloe held her daughter for the first time beneath the quiet lights of the NICU.
The baby’s name was Lily Grace Cole-Harrington.
“She has your mouth,” Harrison said.
Khloe smiled faintly. “And my stubbornness.”
“Good. She’ll need it.”
Harrison did not tell her about the chapel recording until doctors confirmed she was strong enough to hear it.
They played the file in a private room.
Evelyn’s voice filled the speakers.
“The first dose caused bleeding, but not enough. Increase it during the next cycle.”
A male voice replied, “She could die.”
“Then Richard inherits sooner.”
Khloe stopped breathing.
The recording continued with dates, payment amounts, and instructions disguised as fertility treatments.
Her first miscarriage had not been bad luck.
Neither had her second.
Someone had turned her grief into a business plan.
Khloe pressed both hands over her mouth. For years, she had blamed her body. She had apologized to Richard for failing him. She had hated herself in silent bathrooms while the people responsible watched her break.
Harrison shut off the recording.
“I’m sorry.”
Khloe lowered her hands. Her face had changed.
The grief remained, but beneath it something harder had formed.
“I want everyone named.”
“They will be.”
“Doctors. Assistants. Board members. Anyone who knew.”
“Yes.”
“And I want Richard to testify.”
“He may not survive.”
“He survived every time I didn’t.”
Richard did survive.
From his hospital bed under armed guard, he agreed to cooperate in exchange for a reduced sentence. He gave prosecutors names of judges, bankers, inspectors, and hospital executives.
But when Harrison reviewed the cooperation agreement, he found a hidden clause.
Richard would retain limited parental rights if he helped convict Evelyn.
Khloe read the clause once.
“No.”
“The district attorney says his testimony is essential.”
“Then find another way.”
“Khloe—”
“He kidnapped her. He planned to take her out of the country. He stood at the top of those stairs and watched me fall.”
Harrison nodded. “I’ll challenge it.”
That afternoon, Judge Pryce—now charged but not yet removed—issued an emergency order freezing the Cole trust and appointing an outside guardian for Lily.
The appointed guardian was a Harrington family ally.
The court scheduled a hearing for the next morning.
Khloe was still unable to walk without assistance.
But when Harrison entered her room, she was already dressed.
“Where are you going?”
“To court.”
“You just had major surgery.”
May you like
Khloe picked up her cane.
“So did their plan.”
