Chapter 4 - THE WAREHOUSE

The warehouse near the Delaware River looked abandoned from the outside.

Inside, the lights were on.

Harrison and Detective Morales watched from an unmarked car as Richard’s sedan rolled through the gate. A black SUV was already parked near loading bay three—the same vehicle that had carried Vanessa away from the courthouse.

Morales spoke into her radio. “No one moves until backup is in position.”

Harrison opened his door.

She grabbed his sleeve. “You are a witness’s family member, not law enforcement.”

“I’m also the attorney who obtained records showing that building contains stolen marital assets.”

“You don’t have a warrant.”

“I have a federal preservation order signed this morning.”

Morales stared at him. “You knew about this place?”

“I knew Richard was hiding money. I didn’t know he was hiding people.”

A scream came from inside.

They moved.

Police entered through the side door while Harrison followed behind Morales. The warehouse smelled of oil, wet concrete, and smoke.

They found Richard near a steel desk, shouting into his phone.

“Where is she?” Morales demanded.

Richard raised both hands. “Vanessa called me here. She was panicking. When I arrived, the place was empty.”

Harrison noticed a fresh burn barrel.

Documents were still curling into ash.

He kicked it over. Morales pulled half-burned pages free with gloved hands.

Bank transfers.

Insurance policies.

A private medical-services contract bearing the logo of St. Matthew’s Hospital.

Then a muffled banging came from a shipping container.

Officers cut the lock.

Inside, they found the woman in the gray coat.

Her wrists were tied. Tape covered her mouth. A bruise darkened one side of her face.

Harrison recognized her from the courthouse.

She was Nora Pierce, Richard’s former executive assistant, who had vanished six months earlier after allegedly stealing company funds.

Nora ripped the tape away and pointed at Richard.

“He framed me,” she said. “And he’s going to burn the nursery next.”

Richard laughed in disbelief. “She’s unstable.”

Nora reached beneath her coat and pulled out a flash drive.

“I copied everything. Shell companies, judges, inspectors, hospital payments. Vanessa found out Khloe had the files. Richard told her to scare Khloe into signing the settlement.”

Harrison stepped closer. “What nursery?”

“The penthouse Vanessa thinks belongs to her. It contains the original ledgers.”

Richard’s face changed.

A low explosion shook the warehouse.

Flames burst from the office above them.

“Move!” Morales shouted.

Smoke rolled across the ceiling as officers dragged Nora toward the exit.

Harrison turned back just in time to see Richard running toward a rear door.

He chased him through the smoke.

At the loading dock, Richard stopped beside the river.

“You think you’re saving Khloe?” Richard shouted. “You don’t even know whose child she’s carrying.”

Harrison froze.

May you like

Richard smiled.

Then someone fired a gun from the darkness.
