Chapter 8 - THE MOTHER WHO CHOSE MONEY

Margaret Cole had spent her life looking elegant while other people cleaned up the damage she caused.

Harrison found her in the private lounge of First Commonwealth Bank, wearing pearls and drinking tea.

The safe deposit box sat open on the table.

Empty.

“Where are the trust papers?” he asked.

Margaret did not look surprised to see him.

“Lower your voice.”

“Khloe nearly died.”

“I know.” Her hand trembled slightly around the cup. “It’s dreadful.”

“You accessed her box while she was in surgery.”

“Richard called. He said the documents were at risk.”

“Richard tried to kill her.”

Margaret’s face tightened. “Don’t be dramatic.”

Harrison stared at the woman who had given birth to them and somehow never learned how to love either child without calculating the cost.

“Where are they?”

“I gave them to Richard’s counsel for safekeeping.”

Harrison laughed once, without humor. “You handed a fortune to the man who stood still while your daughter bled.”

“He said Vanessa acted alone.”

“And you believed him because?”

Margaret finally looked up. “Because Richard promised to keep the foundation funded.”

There it was.

Not confusion.

Not manipulation.

A transaction.

Harrison’s phone recorded every word from inside his pocket.

“You sold your granddaughter’s future for a charity gala,” he said.

“The foundation helps thousands.”

“The foundation puts your name on buildings.”

Margaret stood. “You have always judged me.”

“No. I kept hoping I was wrong.”

Bank security entered with Detective Morales. Margaret’s anger turned to fear when Morales read her rights for unlawful access, conspiracy, and evidence tampering.

At the police station, Margaret asked to speak privately with Harrison.

“I can get the papers back,” she said. “Richard’s lawyer is meeting someone tonight at the Union League.”

“Who?”

“A probate judge.”

Harrison recognized the name she gave: Judge Malcolm Pryce, the same judge assigned to Khloe’s emergency custody petition.

The trap was larger than a cheating husband and a violent mistress.

They were trying to transfer control of the baby’s trust before Khloe recovered.

Harrison arranged surveillance at the Union League. At 9:40 p.m., Richard’s attorney entered a private dining room carrying a red leather folder.

Judge Pryce arrived five minutes later.

Then Vanessa walked in through the kitchen.

She was supposed to surrender the next morning.

Instead, she sat beside the judge and placed a recording device on the table.

Harrison listened through the surveillance feed.

Vanessa’s voice came through clearly.

“I’ll testify that Richard ordered the hospital hit,” she said. “But first, I want Harrison Cole dead.”
