Chapter 14 - THE FINAL RECORDING

Ethan listened to the recording inside Naomi’s office.

Charles’s voice came through the speaker.

It was calm.

Controlled.

Unmistakable.

“If the child becomes public, we will make the mother disappear before Ethan understands what happened.”

Richard laughed.

“Disappear how?”

“Employment abroad.”

“A settlement.”

“A new identity if necessary.”

“Nothing violent.”

“Nothing that creates questions.”

Ethan stopped the recording.

His hands rested flat on the table.

Rosa sat across from him.

She had not slept.

“Did he mean it?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“How can you know?”

“Because that is how my father thinks.”

“He removes problems.”

“I was a problem.”

“You were a person he could not control.”

Rosa looked toward the window.

“He placed me in your house.”

“He wanted to watch Lily.”

“And perhaps watch whether I spoke.”

Ethan nodded.

A heavy silence followed.

“Will you protect him?” Rosa asked.

“No.”

“He is your father.”

“You are Lily’s mother.”

“That is not an answer.”

Ethan met her eyes.

“No.”

“I will not protect him.”

That afternoon, Charles was questioned by investigators.

He admitted intercepting Rosa’s letters.

He admitted coordinating with Richard.

He insisted his comments about making Rosa disappear referred only to offering her employment outside the country.

The investigators did not accept his explanation without scrutiny.

Neither did Ethan.

Caldwell Technologies issued a statement announcing a complete review of every foundation and company controlled by Charles.

Ethan resigned temporarily as chief executive so the investigation could remain independent.

The decision caused the company’s share price to fall.

Commentators called him reckless.

Some board members demanded his return.

Others accused him of sacrificing thousands of investors for a private family dispute.

Ethan did not defend himself.

He spent the following morning assembling furniture inside a small room at the estate.

The room had once been Victoria’s wedding-planning office.

Now it contained a low bed, bookshelves, toys, and curtains printed with tiny stars.

Rosa stood in the doorway.

“What are you doing?”

“Preparing a room.”

“For Lily?”

“Only when she visits.”

“You did not ask me.”

“You are right.”

Ethan set down the screwdriver.

“I should have asked.”

Rosa entered.

A small keyboard rested beneath the window.

“Why not the piano?”

“The piano is downstairs.”

“This room is for sleeping.”

“She will disagree.”

“I expect she will.”

Rosa looked at the shelves.

There were no expensive dolls.

No designer clothes.

Only ordinary books, crayons, puzzles, and a space for Button.

“You are learning,” she said.

“Slowly.”

Ethan stood.

“The estate is not safe while the investigation continues.”

“Daniel replaced the entire system.”

“I do not mean locks.”

He looked around the room.

“This house contains too much of my father.”

“Too much of Victoria.”

“Too much silence.”

“What will you do?”

“Sell it.”

Rosa stared at him.

“This was your mother’s home.”

“No.”

“The piano was hers.”

“The house belonged to expectations.”

“My mother was happiest in a small cottage near the ocean.”

“She hated these rooms.”

“Then where will you live?”

“I do not know.”

For once, Ethan Caldwell had no plan.

Rosa found that strangely comforting.

Lily entered carrying Button.

She saw the room.

Her eyes widened.

“Is this mine?”

“It can be yours when you visit,” Ethan said.

“Where is the piano?”

“Downstairs.”

“Good.”

Lily walked toward the books.

Rosa watched Ethan watching her.

A phone rang in the hallway.

Daniel answered.

His expression changed.

He entered the room.

“Victoria was released pending the next hearing.”

Ethan frowned.

“Where is she?”

“No one knows.”

At that moment, music echoed from the east parlor.

Three notes.

A pause.

Then three notes again.

Lily looked toward the door.

“That is my song.”

Ethan moved first.

He ran down the hallway.

Rosa grabbed Lily and followed at a distance.

When Ethan reached the parlor, Victoria was sitting at the piano.

She wore the same cream slacks she had worn on the morning of the assault.

The engagement ring rested on the music stand.

“You should not be here,” Ethan said.

Victoria continued playing.

The notes were slow and uneven.

“This piano was supposed to be mine.”

“No.”

“This house was supposed to be mine.”

“No.”

“You promised to marry me.”

“I ended that promise.”

Victoria stopped playing.

“I lost my friends.”

“My father is facing prison.”

“My name is a joke.”

“Those were consequences of choices.”

“My choices?”

She stood.

“Everyone used me.”

“My father used me for a merger.”

“Your father used me to control you.”

“You used me to look stable.”

Ethan did not deny it.

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“At least I finally receive honesty.”

She looked beyond him.

Rosa stood in the doorway holding Lily.

Victoria’s expression changed.

Lily hid her face against Rosa.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Leave.”

Victoria looked at the child.

“I did not mean for her to fall.”

Rosa’s voice was steady.

“You meant to push her.”

“I was angry.”

“She was three.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Rosa took one step into the room.

“You knew her age that day.”

“You did not understand her humanity.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I am sorry.”

Lily looked over Rosa’s shoulder.

Victoria removed the engagement ring from the music stand.

She placed it on the piano.

“I thought being Mrs. Ethan Caldwell would prove I mattered.”

Ethan answered quietly.

“You mattered before me.”

“You simply never learned that other people mattered too.”

Victoria walked toward the door.

Two detectives waited in the hallway.

She had violated a court restriction by entering the estate.

This time, she did not argue when they approached.

Before leaving, she looked back at Lily.

“I hope you keep playing.”

Lily did not answer.

The doors closed behind Victoria.

The room became quiet.

Ethan looked at the ring.

Then at the piano.

Lily slipped from Rosa’s arms and walked toward the bench.

She stopped beside it.

“Can someone hold me?”

Ethan and Rosa reached for her at the same time.

Their hands touched.

Neither pulled away.

Together, they lifted Lily onto the bench.

She pressed three keys.

May you like

The notes filled the room.

This time, no one told her to stop.
