Chapter 11 - THE LAST ENGAGEMENT PARTY

Richard Haynes disappeared before police reached his office.

His attorneys claimed he had traveled for business.

His private plane remained inside its hangar.

His driver could not be located.

Victoria stayed inside her parents’ Manhattan penthouse and issued another statement through her lawyer.

She denied knowing anything about the break-in.

She also refused to return Ethan’s engagement ring.

Ethan did not care about the ring.

He cared about the maps found inside the van.

For the next three days, Rosa and Lily stayed in a secured guesthouse on Naomi’s family property.

Ethan visited only when Rosa permitted it.

He brought no expensive gifts.

He brought crayons.

A children’s puzzle.

A replacement pair of sneakers because Lily had complained again that her old ones were “mixed up.”

On the fourth evening, Lily asked him to read a picture book.

Ethan sat beside her on the rug.

He read too formally.

Lily corrected him.

“The bear has a funny voice.”

“I do not know the bear’s voice.”

“Make one.”

Ethan tried.

It sounded like a tired accountant.

Lily laughed until she hiccupped.

Rosa watched from the doorway.

For a few minutes, they were not an employer, a former maid, a billionaire, or a secret child.

They were simply three people in a warm room.

Then Daniel called.

Victoria had returned to the Caldwell estate.

She had arrived with her mother, wedding planner, photographer, and several invited guests.

The rehearsal dinner had originally been scheduled for that night.

Victoria had told everyone the wedding was proceeding.

“She is inside my house?” Ethan asked.

“She used an old emergency key.”

“Remove her.”

“She refuses.”

Rosa appeared behind him.

“What happened?”

Ethan explained.

Victoria had transformed the estate into a stage.

Photographers were posting images of flowers, crystal place settings, and the engagement portrait.

She intended to create public pressure by acting as if the breakup had never happened.

“She wants you to arrive angry,” Naomi said.

“She wants cameras to record you dragging her out.”

Ethan looked at Rosa.

“I will not give her that.”

Rosa folded her arms.

“What will you give her?”

“The truth.”

An hour later, Ethan entered the Caldwell estate through the front doors.

Rosa stayed inside Daniel’s security vehicle with Lily and Naomi.

Dozens of guests stood beneath the foyer chandelier.

Many looked embarrassed.

Others appeared fascinated.

Victoria waited at the base of the staircase wearing a white evening gown.

The diamond ring glittered on her hand.

“You came,” she said.

“This gathering is over.”

“Our guests deserve an explanation.”

“They received one when they watched you shove a child.”

Victoria’s smile tightened.

“That video lacked context.”

“There is no context in which your behavior becomes acceptable.”

Her mother stepped forward.

“Ethan, we are all under extraordinary pressure.”

“You are trespassing.”

“This was supposed to become Victoria’s home.”

“It will not.”

Victoria’s eyes shone with anger.

“You are choosing a woman who lied to you for four years.”

“I am choosing not to marry a woman who harmed a child and lied about it.”

Victoria moved closer.

“You think Rosa loves you?”

“This is not about whether Rosa loves me.”

“She wants your money.”

“She refused ten million dollars from your father.”

The guests whispered.

Victoria’s expression broke.

“You had no right to reveal that.”

“Your family surrendered privacy when it published Lily’s address.”

Victoria lowered her voice.

“You will lose everything.”

“I have already lost three years with my daughter.”

“Nothing you can take matters more.”

A door opened behind the guests.

Daniel entered with two detectives.

Victoria’s mother stepped back.

“What is this?”

One detective approached Victoria.

“We need to ask you questions regarding unauthorized access to the Caldwell security server.”

“I know nothing about that.”

“We recovered messages between your phone and the technician.”

Victoria’s face changed.

“They are misunderstood.”

The detective continued.

“We also have questions about the men sent to Rosa Martinez’s apartment.”

“My father arranged security.”

“They were carrying false documents for the child.”

Victoria looked toward Ethan.

“You did this.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“I told the truth.”

Victoria rushed toward him.

Daniel stepped between them.

The engagement ring slipped from Victoria’s finger and struck the marble.

For one second, it rested beneath the chandelier’s light.

No one moved to pick it up.

The detectives escorted Victoria toward the door.

She twisted around.

“You will come back to me when she takes your money and leaves.”

Ethan watched her go.

Then a small voice came through the open security van speaker.

“I do not want his money.”

Everyone in the foyer turned.

Lily had pressed the communication button inside the vehicle.

May you like

Her voice echoed through the estate.

“I want the piano.”
