Chapter 9 - THE STORY THEY SOLD

By sunrise, reporters were standing outside Rosa’s apartment building.
Camera crews blocked the sidewalk.
Neighbors peeked through curtains.
Strangers posted photographs of Lily online.
Some called Rosa brave.
Others called her a liar.
Many decided they understood her entire life after reading twelve paragraphs written by someone who had never spoken to her.
Rosa kept the curtains closed.
Lily sat at the kitchen table eating cereal with her bruised wrist resting on a folded towel.
“Why are people outside?” she asked.
“They are waiting for someone.”
“Who?”
Rosa looked at her daughter.
“Us.”
Lily considered this.
“Can we hide?”
The question broke something inside Rosa.
Before she could answer, someone knocked.
Daniel’s voice came through the door.
“It is safe.”
Rosa opened it.
Ethan stood behind Daniel.
He wore yesterday’s clothes.
“I came as soon as I saw the article.”
“You should not be here.”
“I brought additional security.”
“That will make the reporters worse.”
“They published Lily’s school.”
“I know.”
Rosa’s anger rose.
“Someone gave them my address.”
“I know.”
“They photographed her preschool.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying that.”
Ethan fell silent.
Rosa lowered her voice.
“She is three years old, Ethan.”
“I am going to fix this.”
“You cannot fix the internet.”
“I can identify who supplied the information.”
“We both know who did it.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“The article was drafted by a public-relations firm working for Haynes Development.”
Rosa closed her eyes.
Ethan continued.
“We can move you somewhere secure.”
“I will not be hidden.”
“It would only be temporary.”
“That is how it begins.”
“What?”
“First, we hide for safety.”
“Then your lawyers advise silence.”
“Then I become the woman nobody sees while your family decides what happens to my daughter.”
“That will not happen.”
“You cannot promise that.”
Ethan looked toward Lily.
The child was watching them.
He lowered his voice.
“You are right.”
Rosa had expected an argument.
Instead, Ethan sat at the kitchen table across from Lily.
“May I have some cereal?”
Lily looked inside her bowl.
“It is almost gone.”
“I can wait.”
She pushed one piece toward him with her spoon.
Ethan picked it up.
“Thank you.”
Rosa watched him.
He did not belong in the small kitchen.
His knees barely fit under the table.
His expensive shirt was wrinkled.
A yellow star sticker remained attached to his sleeve.
Yet Lily looked calmer with him there.
“What will you do?” Rosa asked.
“Tell the truth.”
“Your attorneys will stop you.”
“They tried.”
“Your board will stop you.”
“They tried too.”
“Your father?”
“He is no longer answering my calls.”
Rosa almost smiled.
Ethan stood.
“There is a press conference at noon.”
“You arranged one?”
“No.”
“Richard did.”
Daniel handed Rosa a tablet.
A live announcement had been scheduled at Haynes Development headquarters.
Victoria would speak publicly for the first time.
“She is going to apologize?” Rosa asked.
Ethan shook his head.
“She is going to claim you entered the parlor, frightened her, and caused Lily to fall.”
Rosa stared at him.
“She knows the camera recorded everything.”
“She believes the footage is gone.”
Daniel allowed himself a grim smile.
“It is not.”
At noon, Victoria stepped behind a podium surrounded by reporters.
She wore pale blue and no jewelry except her engagement ring.
Her voice trembled at the correct moments.
She described a chaotic misunderstanding.
She claimed Lily had climbed onto the piano.
She claimed Rosa had rushed into the room screaming.
She claimed she reached toward the child to prevent her from falling.
Then she displayed a photograph of a bruise on her own wrist.
“Rosa Martinez attacked me,” Victoria said.
“She has been planning this deception for years.”
At Rosa’s apartment, Ethan watched without moving.
Victoria continued.
“My engagement ended because Ethan was manipulated during an emotional moment.”
A reporter raised a hand.
“Are you saying the child is not his?”
“I am saying the circumstances require investigation.”
Another reporter spoke.
“Will the wedding proceed?”
Victoria looked directly into the camera.
“I still love Ethan.”
“I believe he will return to the truth.”
Ethan turned toward Daniel.
“Release the footage.”
Daniel reached for the laptop.
Before he could press the key, the screen went black.
The apartment lights died.

The hallway security alarm began to sound.
Then someone tried to open Rosa’s back door.
