Chapter 10 - THE BREAK-IN

Daniel drew his licensed service weapon but kept it pointed toward the floor.

“Rosa, take Lily into the bathroom.”

Rosa lifted her daughter.

“What is happening?”

“Move now.”

Ethan pushed the kitchen table against the back door.

The handle turned again.

A shoulder struck the wood from outside.

Lily began to cry.

Rosa carried her down the narrow hallway.

“Stay with me, baby.”

The power remained off.

Daniel spoke into his radio.

There was no response.

“Signal jammer,” he said.

Ethan grabbed a heavy iron pan from the counter.

Daniel glanced at it.

“You plan to cook him?”

“I plan to keep him away from my daughter.”

The door shook again.

Then the sound stopped.

Silence filled the apartment.

Daniel moved toward the front window.

A black utility van was parked in the alley.

Two men ran toward it.

The van sped away before Daniel could see the license plate.

Ethan rushed to the bathroom.

Rosa sat inside the bathtub holding Lily.

The child’s face was buried against her mother’s neck.

“They are gone,” Ethan said.

Rosa looked at him.

“This is your world.”

The accusation was quiet.

That made it worse.

“People follow us.”

“They photograph us.”

“They try to enter our home.”

“Lily was safe before you recognized her.”

Ethan absorbed every word.

“She was not safe from Victoria.”

“One terrible person found her.”

“Now thousands know her name.”

Ethan looked at Lily.

He knew Rosa was not blaming him for being Lily’s father.

She was blaming the machinery surrounding his wealth.

Security teams.

Lawyers.

Publicists.

Business enemies.

People who treated lives as leverage.

“I will make this stop.”

“How?”

“By ending the value of the secret.”

Rosa stared at him.

Ethan turned toward Daniel.

“We are releasing everything.”

“The full video?” Daniel asked.

“The video.”

“The paternity result.”

“The settlement agreements.”

“The attempted server deletion.”

“The financing records.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your legal team will object.”

“They are free to object.”

Rosa stood carefully.

“I do not want Lily’s hospital records released.”

“They will not be.”

“I do not want photographs of her face.”

“They will be blurred.”

“I speak for myself.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you will not tell the world we are a family.”

He hesitated.

Rosa continued.

“We share a child.”

“We have not earned the word family yet.”

The truth hurt.

Ethan accepted it.

“Agreed.”

The power returned twenty minutes later.

Daniel’s team traced the outage to a damaged electrical box in the alley.

The men had worn uniforms from a nonexistent utility company.

Police collected fingerprints from the back door.

At three o’clock, Ethan stood before cameras outside Caldwell Technologies.

Rosa stood beside Naomi several feet away.

Daniel remained near the entrance.

Ethan did not use notes.

“This morning, Victoria Haynes made several false statements.”

“She claimed Rosa Martinez attacked her.”

“She claimed Lily fell accidentally.”

“The security footage shows otherwise.”

A large screen behind him displayed the east parlor.

The video began.

Victoria entered.

Lily played three notes.

Victoria approached.

The microphone captured her voice clearly.

“Get your dirty hands off that.”

The crowd became silent.

The video showed Victoria grabbing Lily’s arm.

It showed the shove.

It showed the child falling.

It showed Victoria looking at the broken coffee cup before looking at Lily.

Reporters began shouting questions.

Ethan raised one hand.

“There is more.”

He revealed the settlement offer.

He revealed the attempt to erase the recording.

He revealed the false article and the connection to the Haynes public-relations firm.

Then Rosa stepped toward the microphone.

Her hands shook.

Her voice did not.

“My daughter is not a scandal.”

“She is not evidence in a business argument.”

“She is a little girl who touched a piano because she loved the sound.”

“The woman who hurt her believed Lily mattered less because her mother cleaned houses.”

“The people protecting that woman believed money could change what a camera recorded.”

“They were wrong.”

Rosa stepped away.

The reporters erupted again.

A detective approached Daniel near the entrance.

He whispered something.

Daniel’s expression changed.

He moved toward Ethan.

“The police identified one of the men from the apartment.”

“Who hired him?”

“He works for a private contractor used by Haynes Development.”

Ethan looked toward the cameras.

“Do they have Richard?”

“Not yet.”

Daniel glanced toward Rosa.

“They found something else inside the van.”

“What?”

“Printed photographs of Lily.”

“Schedules.”

May you like

“Maps of her school.”

“And a document authorizing someone to take her across state lines.”
