Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE STAIRCASE

Lucas Bennett stared at the old envelope in the stranger’s hand.
For one suspended moment, no one in the mansion moved.
The orchestra had stopped playing.
Nearly two hundred wedding guests stood beneath the chandeliers, watching the groom abandon the altar while his daughter cried behind a locked bathroom door.
The mysterious woman on the staircase slowly stepped into the light.
Lucas recognized her.
Her name was Margaret Hale.
She had been his late wife’s closest friend.
Margaret had disappeared from their lives shortly after Emily died.
Lucas had been told she moved overseas and wanted no further contact with the Bennett family.
Yet here she was, dressed in black and holding an envelope with Emily’s handwriting across the front.
Vanessa’s face lost all color.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she whispered.
Margaret descended another step.
“Neither should you.”
Lucas looked from Margaret to the key clenched in Vanessa’s hand.
His voice became dangerously calm.
“Open the bathroom door.”
Vanessa forced a laugh.
“Lucas, please.”
“Lily locked herself inside because she was upset.”
“She has been acting out for months.”
Lily struck the door with her small fists.
“She’s lying.”
“She locked me in.”
Lucas took the key from Vanessa.
She tried to hold on to it, but his stare made her release her fingers.
He unlocked the door.
Seven-year-old Lily stood inside wearing the white dress she had chosen for the ceremony.
Her cheeks were wet with tears.
One of her sleeves had been torn.
A red mark circled her wrist.
Lucas dropped to his knees.
“What happened?”
Lily threw herself into his arms.
“She took Mommy’s letter.”
“She said if I told you, she would send me away.”
Lucas held his daughter tightly.
Then he looked over her shoulder at Vanessa.
The woman he had been seconds away from marrying stood in the hallway with her hands trembling.
“What letter?” Lucas asked.
Margaret raised the envelope.
“This one.”
Lucas recognized Emily’s handwriting immediately.
The message on the front was simple.
FOR LUCAS.
ONLY WHEN HE IS READY TO KNOW THE TRUTH.
Vanessa backed toward the ballroom.
“We can discuss this privately.”
Margaret blocked her path.
“No more private discussions.”
Lucas stood with Lily in his arms.
“Tell me what is in that letter.”
Margaret looked at Vanessa.
Then she looked at the guests gathering in the hallway.

“Your wife did not die because of a mechanical failure.”
“She died because she discovered what Vanessa and someone inside your family were planning to do.”
