Chapter 19 - EMILY’S GARDEN

On Clara’s eighteenth birthday, the family gathered in Emily’s garden.
Rose arrived with David and Hannah.
Margaret brought the original photographs from the nursery.
Sophia carried a box of letters recovered from Richard’s files.
Lucas gave Clara a small silver key.
She looked confused.
“What does it open?”
“The front door.”
“I already live here.”
“Not that door.”
Lucas pointed toward a renovated cottage beside the garden.
It had once belonged to Emily.
The cottage was now Clara’s.
“No conditions.”
“No trust arrangement.”
“No one can take it from you.”
Clara stared at the key.
Richard had taught her that every gift created a debt.
Lucas had spent years teaching her otherwise.
She looked toward Lily and Rose.
“Do they get houses too?”
Lily laughed.
“I want the treehouse.”
Rose wanted the garden studio.
Lucas agreed to both.
After dinner, Clara asked Lucas to walk with her.
They stopped beside Emily’s memorial stone.
“I used to imagine what you were like.”
Clara spoke quietly.
“Sometimes I imagined you were cruel.”
“That made it easier to believe you left me.”
Lucas nodded.
“I understand.”
“Sometimes I still get angry when I look at you.”
“You should.”
Clara looked surprised.
Lucas continued.
“You lost years that cannot be returned.”
“You are allowed to grieve them.”
Clara touched the silver key.
“But I found you.”
Lucas smiled sadly.
“And I found you.”
Yellow lights glowed across the garden.
Lily and Rose chased each other between the trees.
Sophia laughed beside Margaret.
May you like
For the first time, Clara looked at the Bennett family without seeing the life stolen from her.
She saw the life still waiting.
