Chapter 16 - THE DAUGHTERS SPEAK
Clara testified first.
She described being raised in a private institution under a false name.
Richard visited once a month.
He told her Lucas was dangerous.
He punished her whenever she asked about Emily.
At thirteen, Clara found a newspaper photograph of the Bennett family.
She recognized her own face in Emily’s features.
Richard locked her in a basement room for three days.
The courtroom remained silent.
Richard did not look at her.
Then Lily testified through a child-friendly video system.
She described Vanessa taking Emily’s letter.
She explained how Richard threatened her at Blackwood Lake.
The prosecutor asked why she believed her father would come.
“Because he heard me cry.”
Richard’s lawyer attempted to suggest that Lucas had coached her.
Lily shook her head.
“Daddy did not tell me what to say.”
“He told me I could stop whenever I wanted.”
“Richard was the one who told children what to say.”
The statement damaged the defense more than any legal argument.
Rose did not testify.
Lucas and the Millers agreed that she had already endured enough disruption.
Sophia testified about her imprisonment.
Eleanor testified after accepting a plea agreement.
She admitted falsifying medical records and helping Richard separate the children.
When asked why, Eleanor cried.
“Money.”
“Fear.”
“And the belief that powerful people would protect me.”
Richard finally took the stand.
He claimed every action had been necessary to preserve the Bennett fortune.
He accused Lucas of weakness.
He called Emily reckless.
Then he made one mistake.
He referred to Clara as “the first asset.”
The jury heard it.
So did Clara.
She looked at Lucas.
He held her gaze.
She was not an asset.
She was his daughter.
