Chapter 18 - VANESSA’S LAST MESSAGE
Three years passed.
Lily and Rose became inseparable despite living in different homes.
Clara prepared for college.
Lucas never remarried.
He no longer believed love should be proven by replacing what had been lost.
One morning, a prison official contacted him.
Vanessa was gravely ill.
She had requested permission to send one final message to Lily and Sophia.
Lucas allowed the letter to be delivered through attorneys.
He did not promise that anyone would read it.
Sophia opened her section first.
Vanessa apologized for resenting her sister’s survival.
She admitted that Richard convinced her Sophia’s imprisonment was her own fault.
Believing the lie had been easier than facing her cowardice.
Lily’s section was shorter.
I locked you in that room because I believed your voice could destroy the life I wanted.
I was right.
Your voice destroyed the lie.
I hope you never become quiet for someone else’s comfort.
Lily folded the letter.
“Do I have to forgive her?”
Lucas answered immediately.
“No.”
“Forgiveness is yours to give or keep.”
Lily thought for a moment.
“I don’t forgive what she did.”
“But I don’t want to think about her every day.”
“That is enough.”
Sophia chose to visit Vanessa.
She did not go to repair their relationship.
She went to say goodbye on her own terms.
Vanessa died several months later.
There was no dramatic reconciliation.
No final miracle.
Only two sisters separated by years of manipulation, sitting across from each other and acknowledging the truth.
