Chapter 13 - VANESSA’S TRIAL
Vanessa faced charges for kidnapping, assault, conspiracy, and concealing evidence.
Her lawyers argued that Richard controlled her through threats against Sophia.
The prosecution agreed that Vanessa had been manipulated.
They also reminded the court that she had locked Lily in a bathroom and threatened her.
Lucas attended the hearing.
He did not attend for revenge.
He attended because Lily deserved to know that adults who harmed children faced consequences.
Vanessa stood before the judge in a plain navy dress.
She looked nothing like the bride from the mansion.
When asked to speak, she turned toward Lucas.
“I spent years telling myself that survival excused everything.”
“It did not.”
“I knew Lily was afraid of me.”
“I used that fear because I wanted the wedding to happen.”
“I believed marrying Lucas would finally free Sophia.”
“But part of me also wanted the Bennett name.”
“I wanted the house.”
“I wanted the power.”
“I became willing to hurt a child to get them.”
She looked toward Lily, who watched from a private video room.
“I am sorry.”
Lily did not respond.
She did not owe Vanessa forgiveness.
Vanessa provided evidence against Richard and Eleanor.
She revealed hidden accounts and named officials involved in the adoption scheme.
Her cooperation reduced her sentence.
It did not erase it.
The judge ordered a lengthy prison term followed by permanent restrictions against contacting the Bennett children.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions at Lucas.
“Do you still love Vanessa?”
“Did you know your daughters were alive?”
“Will you sue Rose’s adoptive parents?”
Lucas stopped.
“The Millers are victims.”
“They raised Rose with love.”
“They will be treated with respect.”
He refused to answer questions about Vanessa.
Clara watched the interview from the car.
“She loved the money more than us.”
Lucas sat beside her.
“Vanessa was afraid.”
“That explains some of her choices.”
“It does not excuse them.”
Clara looked at him.
“Do you hate her?”
Lucas considered the question.
“I hate what she did.”
