Chapter 16 - FOUR STEPS

Everyone stopped.

Even the officers entering the corridor hesitated.

Luca stood with both hands gripping the railing.

His knees shook.

His muscles screamed.

But he was standing.

Arthur stared as if watching a ghost.

“That’s impossible.”

Luca breathed through the pain.

“No.”

He lifted one foot.

The movement was barely six inches.

He placed it forward.

One step.

Arthur backed away.

Luca moved again.

Two.

Bell covered his mouth.

Three.

Arthur’s cane struck the floor as he stumbled backward.

Four.

Luca’s legs gave way.

Vincent reached him before he hit the ground.

But Luca was laughing.

Not loudly.

Not triumphantly.

Simply laughing because twelve years of certainty had just been reduced to four imperfect steps.

Arthur was arrested minutes later.

So was Bell.

Daniel Hale was released.

Mercer entered federal protection and agreed to testify.

For the first time, the conspiracy had names, records, recordings, money transfers, and living witnesses.

It was over.

At least Luca thought it was.

Three days later, an investigator arrived at the estate.

“There’s a problem.”

Luca was in physical therapy.

Maya sat nearby counting repetitions.

“What problem?”

“Arthur’s financial records.”

The investigator placed several pages on the table.

Arthur had transferred millions into an offshore trust.

The beneficiary was not himself.

It was Maya Harper.

Elena stared at the document.

“Why would he leave money to her?”

“He didn’t.”

The investigator pointed toward the date.

“The trust was created eight years ago.”

Before Arthur knew whether Maya was medically compatible.

Before Elena worked at the estate.

Before Maya ever crossed the hedge.

Luca read the next page.

The trust carried one unusual condition.

Maya would inherit control of a specific Costello holding company when she turned twenty-five.

That company owned the land beneath several of Luca’s most valuable businesses.

Arthur had quietly built Maya into the family structure years before anyone knew she existed.

Elena looked at Luca.

“This doesn’t make sense.”

“No.”

Luca turned to Vincent.

“Unless Arthur wasn’t the one who created it.”

Vincent examined the signature authorization.

His face changed.

The trust had been established using Isabella Costello’s private estate.

Luca’s mother had protected Maya before she died.

And hidden inside the trust documents was a letter Luca had never seen.
