Chapter 7 - THE GIRL BEHIND THE GREENHOUSE

For thirty-seven seconds, Luca believed his daughter had been taken.

Those thirty-seven seconds changed him.

He shouted orders that sent every guard across the estate.

Vincent locked the gates.

Elena ran through the upstairs hallway calling Maya’s name.

Then Tommy appeared at the back door.

“She’s with me.”

Everyone stopped.

Tommy pointed toward the abandoned greenhouse beyond the baseball field.

Maya had heard glass break and remembered Luca’s instructions about danger.

She climbed through the bathroom service passage and ran to the one place she believed strangers would not search.

Tommy had followed.

Elena found Maya crouched beneath an old potting table.

She pulled her into her arms.

Luca arrived moments later.

He could not kneel.

He could not run.

He could only sit there while his daughter cried against Elena’s shoulder.

For the first time, the wheelchair felt unbearable.

Not because it made him weak.

Because it made him late.

Back inside, security footage revealed the truth.

The broken window had been a distraction.

Someone had entered through the eastern service corridor while every guard moved toward Maya’s room.

Nothing was taken from Luca’s study.

Nothing was taken from the vault.

The intruder went directly to the medical refrigerator.

The remaining medication was gone.

“They’re destroying evidence.”

Vincent nodded.

But Tommy was staring at the footage.

“Back it up.”

The adults looked at him.

Tommy pointed.

“That guy.”

The figure on-screen moved through the corridor wearing a maintenance uniform.

“What about him?”

“He’s limping.”

Vincent frowned.

“So?”

“I’ve seen him.”

“Where?”

Tommy looked toward Maya.

“At school.”

Three days earlier, the same man had stood beside a delivery truck across from the children’s entrance.

Security enhanced the footage.

The man was identified as Peter Vale.

Former orderly.

Former employee of the hospital where Luca had collapsed twelve years earlier.

And Dr. Samuel Bell’s nephew.

The connection widened.

Bell.

Mercer.

Arthur.

Peter Vale.

Four men across twelve years.

This had never been a single act of revenge.

It had been an operation.

Luca ordered Vincent to locate Bell.

The answer arrived before midnight.

Samuel Bell was living in a nursing facility outside Milwaukee.

Terminal cancer.

Restricted visitors.

Luca decided to go personally.

Elena objected.

“You’re walking into a trap.”

“Possibly.”

“Then don’t go.”

Luca looked at his sleeping daughter through the bedroom doorway.

“For twelve years, other people decided what I was allowed to know.”

He turned toward Elena.

“That ends tomorrow.”

May you like

What none of them knew was that Samuel Bell had already requested one visitor that morning.

Arthur Costello.
