Chapter 19 - THE WALK ACROSS THE COURTHOUSE STEPS

Luca handed Vincent the cane.
Elena saw what he was doing.
“Luca.”
“I know.”
“You don’t have to prove anything.”
“I’m not.”
Maya stood at the bottom of the courthouse steps.
Reporters shouted questions.
Cameras turned.
For twelve years, every public image of Luca Costello had included a wheelchair.
Then he took one step.
The crowd quieted.
Another.
His right leg trembled.
He paused.
Elena moved closer but did not touch him.
Three steps.
Four.
Five.
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“Come on, Dad.”
The word reached him through every other sound.
Dad.
He continued.
Six.
Seven.
Eight.
By the tenth step, Luca was breathing hard.
By the twelfth, he nearly lost balance.
But Elena’s hand found his.
Not to carry him.
Only to remind him he was not alone.
Together they crossed the final distance.
Maya wrapped both arms around him.
Luca laughed.
The cameras captured the moment.
But the photograph that mattered was taken by Tommy on Elena’s old phone.
It was crooked.
Half the courthouse was missing.
Vincent’s shoulder blocked part of the frame.
Maya’s hair covered Luca’s face.
It was perfect.
Months passed.
Luca continued therapy.
The wheelchair remained part of his life.
Some days he needed it.
Some days he walked with a cane.
Recovery was not a miracle.
It was repetitive, frustrating work.
But every week, something returned.
Strength.
Balance.
Confidence.
The estate changed too.
Luca ordered the hidden vault removed.
He considered tearing down the baseball diamond.
Maya objected immediately.
“You can’t.”
“It was built over Arthur’s hiding place.”
“So?”
She placed her hands on her hips.
“You said bad things don’t get to own good places forever.”
Luca looked at Elena.
“Did I say that?”
“No.”
Elena smiled.
“But you should have.”
So the diamond stayed.
One evening Luca stood near home plate while Maya practiced hitting.
Tommy pitched badly.
Maya swung worse.
The ball rolled toward Luca.
Everyone froze.
Luca looked down.
He could have waited for someone to retrieve it.
Instead, he walked toward it.
One step.
Two.
Three.
He bent carefully.
Picked it up.
And threw it back.
The ball traveled only twenty feet.
Tommy caught it.
Maya screamed with excitement.
Luca smiled.
Then Elena’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Luca approached.
The call was from the hospital.
A sealed medical specimen connected to Luca’s original poisoning had just been discovered in storage.
May you like
But it was not labeled with Luca’s name.
It was labeled ISABELLA COSTELLO.
