Chapter 9 - ARTHUR’S REAL PLAN

Arthur Costello had advanced kidney disease.
Vincent confirmed it within hours.
For two years, Arthur had been receiving private treatment under another name.
His condition had deteriorated.
He needed a transplant.
Doctors had apparently ruled out several available relatives.
Then Arthur discovered Maya.
Elena looked sick when Luca told her.
“He brought us here to test her?”
“We don’t know that.”
“You just told me he needs a blood relative.”
“I said we don’t know his entire plan.”
Elena slammed both hands against Luca’s desk.
“I am not letting anyone turn my daughter into a medical solution for that man.”
“Neither am I.”
For once, Luca’s calm frightened her more than anger would have.
Vincent found the employment trail.
Elena’s application had been recommended by a staffing agency created six months earlier.
The agency had only three clients.
All were companies ultimately connected to Arthur.
Maya meeting Luca had never been an accident.
But Arthur had made one mistake.
He underestimated Maya.
He expected Luca to see a maid’s daughter.
Instead, Luca listened to her.
He expected Maya to play in the garden.
Instead, she noticed Luca’s leg moving.
He expected the old diagnosis to remain unquestioned.
Instead, a child had dismantled twelve years of medical deception with one observation.
Your legs are sleeping.
Not dead.
Luca immediately transferred Maya’s medical records to a protected system.
Then he did something no one expected.
He announced publicly that he was returning to intensive neurological rehabilitation.
The message was bait.
If Arthur believed Luca might recover, he would accelerate whatever came next.
The reaction took less than a day.
Mercer contacted Vincent.
He wanted immunity.
He claimed Arthur had threatened his family.
He offered documents proving the poisoning.
But he would meet only Luca.
Alone.
An abandoned private clinic outside Chicago.
Elena hated the idea.
Vincent hated it more.
Luca went anyway, with security positioned nearby.
Mercer waited inside a dark treatment room.
He looked exhausted.
“You have no idea what Arthur built around you.”
“Then explain.”
“He controls people you still trust.”
“Names.”
Mercer shook his head.
“He’ll know.”
Luca moved closer.
“Arthur already knows I’m coming.”
Mercer’s face drained.
“No.”
A door slammed somewhere deeper inside the building.
Mercer backed away.
“He found me.”
Vincent’s team entered.
But Arthur was not there.
Instead, they found a laptop running a live video feed.
The camera showed Maya’s school.
Then the image changed.
A message appeared.
LUCA.
