Chapter 17 - ISABELLA’S LAST GIFT

Isabella’s second letter was shorter.
Luca,
If Maya exists, Arthur must never know what I have done.
The child deserves a future outside the wars of this family.
I cannot undo what I allowed.
But I can leave her something Arthur cannot easily steal.
Luca stopped reading.
Maya sat beside him.
“Grandma knew about me?”
“Yes.”
“Did she love me?”
Luca looked at the child his mother had never held.
“I think she tried to.”
Maya considered this.
“That counts.”
Luca smiled.
Sometimes children made complicated things painfully simple.
Isabella had secretly moved property and voting rights into a trust for Luca’s future child.
The trust could only activate after confirmed parentage.
Arthur had spent years trying to locate it.
That was the deeper reason he monitored Elena.
Maya was not only Luca’s daughter.
She was the key to a block of assets Arthur had never been able to control.
His medical desperation came later.
The conspiracy had begun with power.
It ended with survival.
Elena refused to allow Maya anywhere near the business.
“She’s eight.”
“Agreed.”
“She needs school.”
“Agreed.”
“Friends.”
“Agreed.”
“Normal birthday parties.”
Luca hesitated.
Elena narrowed her eyes.
“Normal.”
“I don’t know what that means.”
“It means no helicopters.”
“That seems unnecessarily restrictive.”
Maya laughed from across the room.
Something changed after that.
The estate stopped feeling like Luca’s fortress.
Elena moved into the guest wing temporarily while the legal proceedings continued.
Maya filled empty rooms with drawings.
Tommy treated the baseball field as personal property.
Luca attended therapy every morning.
Five steps became seven.
Seven became twelve.
Then twenty.
He still needed assistance.
Some days his legs refused to cooperate.
Some mornings he hated the sight of the parallel bars.
But Maya kept a chart.
Every step earned a star.
Luca Costello, feared by executives and rivals across Chicago, found himself negotiating with an eight-year-old over stickers.
Then one afternoon Elena received a call.
She walked outside.
When she returned, she looked stunned.
“What happened?”
She handed Luca the phone.
The caller was the district attorney.
Arthur had requested a private meeting.
Not with Luca.
Not with his attorney.
May you like
With Elena.
And he claimed he could prove that one person involved in the conspiracy was still free.
