Chapter 1 - The Woman Above Gate 42

Daniel’s smile disappeared the moment he looked up.
For several seconds, he simply stared at me from the center of the terminal.
His face lost all color.
The woman beside him followed his gaze.
Her hand was still resting against the navy jacket I had bought him.
His father turned around next.
Then Lauren.
Then Owen and Sophie.
One by one, they saw me standing on the balcony above Gate 42.
Nobody moved.
Nobody smiled.
Nobody even pretended this was an innocent coincidence.
Daniel slowly lowered his phone.
“Rachel?”
He did not shout my name.
He breathed it like a man watching the ground vanish beneath his feet.
I descended the escalator without looking away from him.
My heart was pounding so violently that I could feel it in my throat.
But my face remained calm.
That frightened Daniel more than tears would have.
He stepped away from the other woman.
“Rachel, what are you doing here?”
I reached the bottom of the escalator.
“I could ask you the same question.”
The other woman pulled her hand away from his jacket.
Daniel glanced around the terminal as if searching for an exit.
“I can explain.”
“Please do.”
I held up my phone.
“Explain why you told me you were performing an emergency procedure.”
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
“Explain why you said a patient’s life was hanging in the balance.”
“Rachel, lower your voice.”
My voice had barely risen.
He was afraid of the people beginning to watch us.
“Explain why your father, your sister, and your children are standing beside your mistress with passports and matching luggage.”
“She is not my mistress.”
The woman’s expression changed.
She looked at Daniel sharply.
I turned toward her.
“What did he tell you?”
Daniel stepped between us.
“This is not the place.”
The woman moved around him.
“He told me you were separated.”
A cold silence fell between us.
I studied her carefully.
She looked to be in her late thirties.
She wore a cream coat, gold earrings, and the stunned expression of someone realizing she had not been told the whole truth either.
“My husband slept in our bedroom three nights ago.”
Her lips parted.
“He said he stayed in the guest room.”
“We do not have a guest room.”
Daniel grabbed my elbow.
I looked down at his hand.
He released me immediately.
“Rachel, please.”
“Do not touch me.”
His father stepped forward.
Richard Bennett had always carried himself like the most important man in every room.
Even now, he looked more annoyed than ashamed.
“This family matter does not need to become a public spectacle.”
“You made it public when you brought Daniel’s girlfriend through one of the busiest airports in America.”
Lauren folded her arms.
“You were never supposed to be here.”
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Lauren.”
But it was too late.
I looked at each of them.
“That may be the first honest thing anyone has said.”
Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.
She was thirteen, but in that moment she looked much younger.
“Rachel, Dad said you didn’t want to come.”
Owen looked at his father.
“You told us she knew.”
Daniel’s carefully constructed story was beginning to collapse.
The woman beside him stepped backward.
“What exactly did you tell your family about me?”
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“Vanessa, not now.”
So that was her name.
Vanessa.
The boarding announcement for their flight echoed through the terminal.
Final boarding call.
Richard looked toward the gate.
“We can deal with this after the trip.”
I almost laughed.
“You still think you are getting on that plane?”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Rachel, do not threaten me.”
“I am not threatening you.”
I lifted my phone and showed him the photographs I had taken from the balcony.
His arm around Vanessa.
Her hand on his chest.
The kiss.
The entire family standing around them.
“I am preserving evidence.”
His expression hardened.
“What are you planning to do?”
I stepped close enough that only he could hear my answer.
“Find out how many years of my life were built on your lies.”
Then I moved away from him.
Daniel followed.
“Rachel, wait.”
I did not stop.
Behind me, another boarding announcement sounded.
The gate agent began closing the door.
Daniel looked toward the flight.
Then he looked at me.
For the first time that morning, he was being forced to choose.
He ran after me.
The door to Gate 42 closed behind him.

His vacation was over.
Mine had just begun.
