Chapter 9 - The Hospital’s Questions

Dr. Foster asked me to come to the hospital the next morning.

Maya insisted on joining me.

St. Matthew’s Medical Center had once felt like an extension of my marriage.

I attended fundraising dinners there.

I knew the nurses who worked Daniel’s floor.

His photograph hung in the surgical wing beside a plaque praising his commitment to excellence.

Now every hallway looked different.

Dr. Foster met us in a private conference room.

She was in her early fifties, with silver-streaked hair and a direct, measured voice.

The hospital’s general counsel sat beside her.

A recorder rested in the center of the table.

“With your permission, we would like to document this conversation.”

I agreed.

Dr. Foster opened a file.

“Dr. Bennett submitted reimbursement requests for multiple conferences over the last eighteen months.”

“Some of those requests included lodging and travel for a foundation representative.”

“Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“Were you aware of these trips?”

“No.”

“He told me most of them were surgical conferences.”

The attorney slid a list toward me.

Milwaukee.

Boston.

Miami.

Denver.

New York.

Daniel had claimed to be working during every one.

Some trips had never appeared on our credit card statements because the hospital paid for them.

Others had been charged to a foundation account intended for donor outreach.

“What about Paris?”

Dr. Foster’s expression changed.

“The Paris trip was described as a donor-development retreat.”

“Were Daniel’s father, sister, and children listed as donors?”

“No.”

“Then who paid?”

“That is what we are investigating.”

Maya placed copies of Daniel’s messages on the table.

Dr. Foster read the exchange about transferring money after Paris.

Then she examined the forged authorization documents.

“Are you alleging Dr. Bennett falsified your signature?”

“Yes.”

“Do you believe Ms. Cole knew?”

“I do not know.”

That was the truth.

Vanessa had participated in the affair.

But Daniel had lied to her too.

I would not accuse her of crimes without proof.

Dr. Foster nodded.

“Ms. Cole was placed on administrative leave this morning.”

“What about Daniel?”

“He was asked not to perform procedures until the preliminary review is completed.”

A surgeon being removed from the operating schedule was not a small precaution.

Daniel would see it as humiliation.

He would blame me.

As we left the hospital, reporters were gathering near the main entrance.

Someone had leaked news of the internal investigation.

Daniel stood beside his attorney on the sidewalk.

When he saw me, he broke away from the man.

“What did you tell them?”

“The truth.”

“You are trying to destroy me.”

“You used hospital funds to finance your affair.”

“That is not what happened.”

“Then explain what happened.”

“Not here.”

He looked toward the cameras.

“Of course.”

“You only lie well when nobody can see you.”

His attorney touched his shoulder.

“Daniel, do not engage.”

But Daniel stepped closer.

“You think Maya cares about you?”

“She is using you to create a high-profile case.”

Maya smiled without warmth.

“I was high-profile before your client booked a family vacation with his girlfriend.”

Daniel ignored her.

“Rachel, come home with me.”

“I am already home.”

“We can fix this.”

“No.”

“What do you want me to say?”

“The truth.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You could never handle the truth.”

The words sounded rehearsed.

I waited.

Daniel looked at the reporters, the hospital doors, and the wife he no longer controlled.

Then he lowered his voice.

“I stopped loving you years ago.”

The sentence should have broken me.

Instead, it freed me.

“Then you should have left years ago.”

His face tightened.

“I stayed for the children.”

“No.”

“You stayed for my house, my inheritance, and the image of a perfect family.”

Before he could respond, Vanessa walked out of the hospital.

She was carrying a cardboard box.

She saw Daniel.

Then she saw me.

She crossed the sidewalk and stopped directly in front of him.

“You told them the reimbursements were approved.”

Daniel glanced toward the reporters.

“Vanessa, not now.”

“You said your father handled everything.”

“Stop talking.”

“You told me Rachel signed the property documents.”

“Vanessa.”

May you like

She slapped a folder against his chest.

“I am done protecting you.”
