Chapter 13 - Beneath the Keys

Emily’s piano had stood in our living room for twelve years.
Daniel never played it.
Neither did the children.
He said he kept it because it was one of the few beautiful things Emily had left behind.
I now understood that sentiment had nothing to do with it.
The piano was too heavy to discard casually.
Daniel may not have known about the hidden compartment.
Or he may have spent years searching the wrong places.
A piano technician arrived under Maya’s supervision.
He removed the front panel and examined the underside of the keyboard.
After twenty minutes, he found a narrow wooden latch.
A compartment opened beneath the bass keys.
Inside was a sealed envelope wrapped in plastic.
Emily Bennett had written one word across the front.
PROOF.
Owen covered his mouth.
Sophie reached for my hand.
The envelope contained copies of bank statements, property records, handwritten notes, and a small cassette tape.
Samuel Price still owned equipment capable of playing it.
We gathered in Maya’s conference room that evening.
Emily’s voice emerged through the speakers.
It was the first time Sophie remembered hearing her biological mother speak.
“My name is Emily Bennett.”
“If this recording is being played, I may not have been able to present these records myself.”
Her voice trembled, but every word was deliberate.
“My husband, Daniel Bennett, has transferred money from my family trust without permission.”
“His father, Richard Bennett, has arranged documents that contain signatures I did not provide.”
“They have told me that nobody will believe me.”
“They have threatened to describe me as unstable if I speak publicly.”
The tape clicked softly.
Then Emily continued.
“Daniel has also threatened to prevent me from seeing our children.”
“He says his position as a physician will make his testimony more credible than mine.”
“He says Richard knows judges, hospital executives, and police officers.”
“I do not know which threats are real.”
“But I know I am no longer safe staying silent.”
Sophie began to cry.
Owen sat completely still.
The recording included account numbers connected to North Meridian Holdings.
It also included the name of the notary who later certified the false transfer of my house.
The same system had been operating for more than twelve years.
Maya contacted federal financial investigators.
The amounts crossing state lines and involving trusts created possible federal jurisdiction.
Dr. Foster received copies because hospital reimbursements had flowed into related accounts.
By the following morning, Daniel’s suspension became public.
St. Matthew’s announced that it was investigating financial misconduct and false expense submissions.
Richard called me eleven times.
I answered the twelfth call with Maya recording beside me.
“What have you done?”
“I found Emily’s records.”
Silence.
Then his voice changed.
“You need to bring those documents to me.”
“No.”
“They belong to the Bennett family.”
“They belong to investigators.”
“You do not understand the damage you are causing those children.”
“The damage was caused when you hid their mother’s letter.”
“That letter was inappropriate.”
“It was hers.”
“She was unstable.”
“The recording sounds very clear.”
Richard inhaled slowly.
“Rachel, listen to me.”
“I have spent my life protecting this family.”
“From the women your son steals from?”
“From scandal.”
“No.”
“You protected the scandal.”
His voice became colder.
“You believe you have won because you found old documents.”
“You have not won.”
“What else is there, Richard?”
He paused.
Then he said the words that changed the investigation again.
May you like
“Ask yourself why Emily was driving on that road.”
The call ended.
