Chapter 20 - Gate 42 Again

Eighteen months after the morning that ended my marriage, I returned to O’Hare.

This time, I was not standing alone.

Owen walked beside me carrying a backpack and complaining that Sophie had packed too many shoes.

Sophie rolled her eyes and pulled a bright yellow suitcase behind her.

We were flying to Boston for a week before Owen began college.

It was not a replacement family vacation.

It was simply our family, moving forward in the shape life had given us.

As we passed the security checkpoint, I saw the sign.

Gate 42.

For a moment, the airport disappeared.

I saw Daniel in his navy jacket.

Vanessa’s hand against his chest.

Richard holding the travel documents.

Lauren watching silently.

The children believing I had chosen not to come.

I remembered the sound of Daniel’s voice telling me he was saving a life.

I remembered how badly I wanted to believe him.

Sophie noticed that I had stopped walking.

“Are you okay?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

I smiled.

“I am exactly where I am supposed to be.”

We continued toward the gate.

My phone rang inside my purse.

The screen displayed a number from the federal detention center where Daniel was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy and financial fraud.

He was permitted limited calls.

This was the third time he had tried that month.

I stared at the number.

Owen glanced at the screen.

“You don’t have to answer.”

“I know.”

I silenced the call.

Daniel had spent years deciding which truths I was allowed to know.

He no longer had the right to interrupt my peace simply because he had finally run out of lies.

At the gate, Sophie sat beside the window.

Planes moved across the runway beneath a clear morning sky.

Owen bought three coffees, including one for himself that I knew he would pretend to enjoy.

The boarding announcement began.

I looked around the terminal.

No secret vacation.

No hidden woman.

No family conspiring to erase me.

Only two children I had loved for most of their lives.

Only a future that belonged entirely to us.

Sophie reached for my hand as we entered the boarding line.

“Rachel?”

“Yes?”

“Thank you for not leaving us.”

I squeezed her fingers.

“I never planned to.”

Owen looked back at us.

“Come on.”

“We’re going to miss the flight.”

We followed him down the boarding bridge.

Before stepping onto the plane, I glanced back once.

Gate 42 was still there.

It no longer looked like the place where my life ended.

It was the place where I finally saw the truth.

Daniel believed being caught had destroyed him.

He was wrong.

His lies destroyed the life he had stolen from everyone around him.

The truth only opened the door.

May you like

And this time, I was the one walking through it.
