Chapter 11 - The Family Meeting

Daniel demanded to see the children.

Maya advised me not to prevent contact without a court order.

We arranged a meeting at a family counseling center.

A licensed therapist remained in the room.

I sat behind a one-way observation window with Maya.

Daniel arrived carrying gifts.

A new phone for Sophie.

A gaming laptop for Owen.

He had always used generosity when apologies required accountability.

Sophie did not touch the phone.

Owen left the laptop in its bag.

Daniel sat across from them.

“I know this has been confusing.”

Owen stared at him.

“You told us Rachel knew about Vanessa.”

“I believed she understood our marriage was ending.”

“She did not.”

“Relationships are complicated.”

“Lying isn’t.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I made mistakes.”

“You forged her signature.”

“That is an allegation.”

“You told Grandpa you were going to transfer the rest of her money after Paris.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“You had no right to read private messages.”

“You gave me the tablet.”

“That does not mean you can spy on me.”

Owen looked toward the therapist.

“Is he seriously blaming me?”

The therapist remained calm.

“Dr. Bennett, this meeting is intended to focus on your children’s feelings.”

“I am trying to explain context.”

Sophie finally spoke.

“Did you love Vanessa when you kissed Rachel goodbye?”

Daniel looked at her.

The question seemed to catch him off guard.

“I care about Vanessa.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“My relationship with Rachel had been difficult for a long time.”

“Did you love Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then why did you keep sleeping next to Rachel?”

Daniel looked toward the observation window.

He knew I was behind it.

“I did not want to hurt the family.”

“You already did.”

“I wanted to manage the transition carefully.”

Owen laughed without humor.

“You mean steal the house first.”

“That is not what happened.”

“Then tell us what happened.”

Daniel’s patience cracked.

“You are sixteen years old.”

“You do not understand property law, marriage, or financial planning.”

“I understand you lied.”

“You are repeating Rachel’s accusations.”

“No.”

Owen’s voice grew stronger.

“I am repeating your messages.”

Daniel stood.

“This meeting is over.”

Sophie began crying.

The therapist asked him to sit down.

Instead, Daniel walked toward the door.

Owen called after him.

“Did Mom cheat on you?”

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

“Our real mom.”

“Did Emily cheat on you?”

Daniel slowly turned around.

“Who brought that up?”

“You did.”

“You told me she died driving to meet another man.”

“You told Sophie she was coming home to apologize.”

“Which one was true?”

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the observation glass.

“Rachel is poisoning you against me.”

I stood and opened the door.

“That question came from Owen.”

“You had no right to discuss Emily.”

“I did not.”

“He told me what you said.”

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

Maya stepped into the room.

“We obtained Emily Bennett’s accident report this morning.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because your stories conflict.”

“That is none of Rachel’s business.”

“She is reviewing family history relevant to the children’s welfare.”

Daniel looked at Owen.

“Your mother was troubled.”

“Was she having an affair?”

“She was planning to leave.”

“Why?”

Daniel said nothing.

Maya opened a folder.

“According to Emily’s attorney, she filed a confidential petition for divorce two weeks before her death.”

The room became silent.

Owen stared at his father.

“You told us she wanted to come back.”

Daniel’s voice turned cold.

“You do not know what she was like.”

Maya continued.

“The petition alleged financial control, repeated deception, and threats to take the children.”

Sophie covered her mouth.

Daniel moved toward Maya.

“You had no right to obtain that.”

“It is a court record.”

“She withdrew it.”

“No.”

May you like

Maya held his gaze.

“She died before the first hearing.”
