Chapter 1 - THE FOUR WORDS

“Grandma put me in.”

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The garage seemed to tilt around me.

The freezer stood open behind Lily, pouring white mist across the concrete like something alive.

I pulled my jacket tighter around her shoulders and forced myself to stay calm.

“Lily, listen to me.”

“You didn’t do anything wrong.”

Her chin trembled.

“Grandma says I make Mommy tired.”

I felt something cold move through me that had nothing to do with the October air.

“What does that mean?”

Lily looked toward the door connecting the garage to the house.

“She says Mommy would still love you if I behaved better.”

Every word landed harder than the one before it.

I reached for my phone and called emergency services.

While we waited, I carried Lily into my truck and turned the heater on.

I didn’t want her inside that house for another second.

The dispatcher told me not to warm her too quickly.

So I wrapped blankets around her and kept talking.

I asked simple questions.

Her teacher’s name.

Her favorite cartoon.

What she wanted for breakfast.

Anything that kept her eyes open.

Then headlights swept across the driveway.

Evelyn’s car was already there.

The new vehicle belonged to Taylor.

She pulled in fast, stopped crookedly, and jumped out.

The moment she saw me holding Lily, her face changed.

Not confusion.

Not concern.

Fear.

“What are you doing here?”

I stared at the woman I had loved for eleven years.

“Our daughter was inside the freezer.”

Taylor went completely still.

Behind her, Evelyn appeared in the doorway.

My former mother-in-law looked at Lily and then at me.

For the first time in all the years I had known her, Evelyn had nothing to say.

Then Taylor whispered something I almost didn’t hear.

“Mom, what did you do?”

Evelyn’s expression hardened immediately.

“She was throwing another tantrum.”

I felt my hands curl into fists.

Taylor turned toward her mother.

“You said you stopped doing that.”

The sentence shattered whatever remained of my old life.

I looked at Taylor.

“You knew?”

Sirens sounded at the end of Aspen Ridge Lane.

Taylor started crying.

May you like

But she didn’t deny it.

And that was when I realized the freezer was only the beginning.
