Chapter 14 - THE TRIAL

January arrived beneath three days of snow.

The courthouse steps were lined with reporters.

I hated that Lily’s pain had become a headline.

We kept her identity protected as much as possible.

Evelyn entered the courtroom wearing navy blue.

Her hair was perfectly arranged.

Her posture straight.

For a moment, she looked exactly like the woman who used to bring pie to Thanksgiving and correct everyone’s table manners.

Then the recording played.

Her voice filled the courtroom.

“If you tell your father about the cold place, he’ll leave forever.”

Evelyn did not flinch.

Taylor did.

She lowered her head and cried silently.

Aaron testified first.

He spoke about the yellow room.

The isolation.

The threats.

The years of being told Daniel didn’t want them.

The defense accused him of seeking revenge.

Aaron answered calmly.

“I wanted distance.”

“She brought me back when she used the same methods on my niece.”

Daniel testified about the letters.

The petitions.

The threats.

Then Taylor took the stand.

I had never seen her so afraid.

Evelyn watched her with the expression of a disappointed teacher.

Taylor described the first freezer incident.

The closet punishment.

The lies.

Her own failure to intervene.

The prosecutor asked the hardest question.

“Ms. Mercer, why should this jury trust your testimony when you allowed your daughter to remain in danger?”

Taylor looked toward me.

Then toward the empty seat reserved for the child advocate.

“They shouldn’t trust me because I was a good mother.”

Her voice shook.

“I wasn’t.”

“They should trust me because I am finally telling the truth even though the truth makes me look terrible.”

The courtroom became silent.

Taylor looked directly at Evelyn.

“My mother taught me that love meant obedience.”

“I taught my daughter the same lesson every time I stayed quiet.”

“I can’t change that.”

“But I can stop lying about it.”

For the first time, Evelyn’s expression cracked.

Not sadness.

Rage.

When Taylor stepped down, Evelyn leaned toward her attorney and whispered something.

He tried to stop her.

She stood anyway.

“I want to testify.”

May you like

Her attorney closed his eyes.

And every person in the courtroom knew the trial was about to explode.
