Chapter 8 - THE LIE

By Monday, Evelyn had changed the story completely.

Her attorney argued that the freezer had never been used as punishment.

He claimed Lily had been playing hide-and-seek.

He said Evelyn had stepped outside for a phone call and returned to find police everywhere.

The garage footage made that argument difficult.

So the defense attacked the footage instead.

They questioned Aaron’s motives.

They suggested the camera timestamps were unreliable.

They portrayed our family as divided and vindictive.

Then they went after me.

My work travel.

The divorce.

The nights I had spent in hotels during the separation.

The fact that I had not noticed Lily’s fear sooner.

That part hurt because it was true.

I hadn’t noticed.

Not enough.

When the judge asked whether I believed Taylor had intentionally harmed Lily, I answered carefully.

“No.”

Taylor looked at me in surprise.

“But I believe she repeatedly failed to protect her.”

Taylor lowered her eyes.

My attorney requested temporary sole custody.

Taylor’s attorney did not oppose it.

That surprised everyone.

Even the judge.

Taylor stood.

Her voice shook.

“I love my daughter.”

“I also understand she doesn’t feel safe with me right now.”

“I won’t fight an order that makes her feel safer.”

For the first time since Thursday night, I saw something in Taylor that looked like the woman I used to know.

Not enough to erase what happened.

But enough to remind me she wasn’t Evelyn.

The judge granted me temporary sole custody.

Taylor received supervised visits.

Evelyn was prohibited from any contact.

Outside the courtroom, reporters were waiting.

Someone had leaked the freezer story.

I kept Lily away from them.

Aaron drove us through a back exit.

That evening, Lily and I returned to my rental house.

I made grilled cheese.

She asked for the crusts cut off.

We watched a movie.

For two hours, life almost felt ordinary.

Then at bedtime, I opened her closet to get an extra blanket.

Lily screamed.

I spun around.

She had backed against the wall.

“No closet.”

I closed the door immediately.

“I’m sorry.”

She was shaking again.

I sat on the floor beside her.

“Did Grandma lock you in closets too?”

Lily stared at her knees.

“No.”

I waited.

Then she whispered, “Mommy did.”

Everything inside me went still.
