Chapter 11 - EVELYN’S REVENGE

Evelyn’s strategy was cruel and simple.

If she could not control Taylor, she would bury her.

Through her attorney, she provided investigators with recordings of Taylor yelling during arguments.

Text messages in which Taylor complained about motherhood.

Photographs of broken dishes from the final months of our marriage.

None proved Taylor had physically harmed Lily.

But together, they painted a picture Evelyn hoped would create doubt.

Taylor sat across from me in my attorney’s office.

“I said horrible things.”

“You were angry.”

“I said I wished I could disappear.”

“That doesn’t mean you wanted to abandon Lily.”

Taylor looked exhausted.

“Mom saved everything.”

Aaron shook his head.

“Of course she did.”

Evelyn had collected ammunition for years.

Every weakness.

Every mistake.

Every private confession.

She didn’t love information.

She loved leverage.

Then investigators uncovered something worse.

One of Evelyn’s phones contained audio recordings from inside our former home.

She had secretly recorded arguments between Taylor and me.

Hundreds of hours.

At first, I felt violated.

Then my attorney called me into his office.

“You need to hear one of these.”

The recording was eighteen months old.

Taylor and I were arguing in the kitchen.

I remembered the fight.

I had just returned from Chicago.

Taylor accused me of caring more about work than our family.

Then Evelyn’s voice entered from the background.

“Why don’t you tell him what Lily said?”

Taylor answered.

“Mom, stop.”

“What did she say?”

I asked in the recording.

Evelyn replied.

“She said she doesn’t want him here.”

I remembered that sentence.

It had devastated me.

I left the house that night.

But the recording continued after the front door slammed.

Taylor turned on her mother.

“She never said that.”

Evelyn answered calmly.

“He needed to hear it.”

Then Taylor said, “You’re trying to make him leave.”

Evelyn laughed.

“He was already leaving.”

I sat frozen.

One lie had helped push our marriage toward collapse.

Maybe not caused it.

But pushed.

My attorney looked at me.

“There are dozens like this.”

I thought of every argument.

Every misunderstanding.

Every time Evelyn had translated someone else’s feelings for them.

Then we found the recording that mattered most.

Lily’s voice.

May you like

Crying.

And Evelyn saying, “If you tell your father about the cold place, he’ll leave forever.”
