Chapter 17 - WHY THE MARRIAGE ENDED

Taylor came to my house the next evening.

Lily was with Aaron and Daniel.

We sat at the kitchen table where there were no lawyers, no therapists, and no judges.

Just two people trying to understand the ruins of their marriage.

Taylor placed a folder between us.

Inside were printed text messages between her and Evelyn.

For nearly a year, Evelyn had worked on both of us.

When I traveled, she told Taylor I preferred being away.

When Taylor was angry, Evelyn told me Taylor had stopped loving me.

When Lily cried after I left for work, Evelyn told Taylor it proved I was destabilizing her.

When Taylor wanted counseling, Evelyn told her I would use therapy against her in court.

“She told me to file first.”

Taylor looked at me.

“She said if I didn’t, you would take Lily.”

I stared at the messages.

“Why didn’t you talk to me?”

“I thought we had stopped talking.”

That hurt because it was true.

We had.

Not because Evelyn controlled every part of our marriage.

We had made our own mistakes.

I worked too much.

Taylor shut down during conflict.

We used silence as punishment.

We let resentment become routine.

Evelyn didn’t create every crack.

She simply learned how to widen them.

“Do you want the divorce undone?”

I asked.

Taylor looked surprised.

Then sad.

“No.”

I felt something complicated move through me.

Relief.

Grief.

Maybe respect.

“Neither do I.”

Taylor nodded.

“I think we loved each other.”

“But I don’t think going backward would fix anything.”

“No.”

“We have to go forward differently.”

She looked toward the hallway where Lily’s school photographs hung.

“I want to become someone she can trust.”

“That could take years.”

“I know.”

“And she gets to decide how close you become.”

“I know.”

I studied her.

This time, when she said those words, they didn’t sound empty.

Before leaving, Taylor stopped at the door.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Mom’s sentencing attorney contacted me.”

My stomach tightened.

“She wants me to speak on her behalf.”

“What are you going to do?”

Taylor looked back at me.

“I’m going to speak.”

I frowned.

“On her behalf?”

May you like

Taylor shook her head.

“On Lily’s.”
