Chapter 12 - The Trap

Emily laughed when Ryan showed her the passenger manifest.
It was not amusement.
It was disbelief.
“He used my passport?”
“An old passport number.”
“The one from when we were married.”
Ryan nodded.
“Adrian had a copy in company travel records.”
Emily looked at the flight details.
“If that plane leaves with my name on the manifest, it looks like I fled.”
“With him.”
“And with a financial attorney.”
Ryan nodded.
“Which makes you look involved in the fraud.”
Emily leaned back.
“He’s trying to rewrite the story before we expose him.”
“Exactly.”
She looked at Ryan.
“What do you want to do?”
“Let him believe it worked.”
Emily raised an eyebrow.
Ryan continued.
“The plane leaves tomorrow.”
“Homeland Security already has the passenger information.”
“If we alert them too early, Adrian may cancel.”
“And if we wait?”
“He boards.”
Emily stared at him.
“You want him arrested at the airport.”
“I want evidence.”
Ryan tapped the document.
“If Melissa is with him, she may be carrying records.”
Emily thought carefully.
“What if she’s afraid of him?”
Ryan’s expression softened.
“Then we give her a way out.”
Through Marcus, they sent Melissa a message on an old encrypted account.
We know about the letter.
We know about Meridian.
You do not have to protect Adrian anymore.
For twelve hours, nothing happened.
Then at 2:14 a.m., Emily’s phone buzzed.
A single reply.
He said Ryan wanted the baby gone.
Emily stopped breathing.
Ryan read the message.
His face changed.
Another message appeared.
He told me intercepting the letter was protecting Ryan.
Then another.
I believed him until I saw the trust documents.
Ryan typed.
What trust documents?
Melissa responded.
The boys were part of the plan before they were born.
Emily grabbed the phone.
What does that mean?
No answer came.
They waited.
One minute.
Two.
Five.
Then Melissa finally replied.
Adrian knew Emily was carrying Harrison heirs.
If Ryan died without acknowledged children, Adrian inherited voting control of the Harrison family trust.
Ryan read the sentence twice.
Emily felt the room tilt.
The fraud.
The divorce.
The hidden pregnancy.
Suddenly everything connected to something far larger.
Ryan looked at her.
“My grandfather’s trust.”
Emily whispered.
“What happens if you have children?”
“They inherit my voting shares.”
“And Adrian?”
“Gets nothing.”
Silence.
Emily’s blood turned cold.
Adrian had not simply wanted her out of Harrison Energy.
May you like
He had needed Ryan’s children erased from Ryan’s life.
And five years later, those children had just appeared in front of the entire world.
