Chapter 18 - What It Cost

The forensic audit lasted six weeks.

The damage was worse than expected.

Adrian had diverted more than ninety million dollars.

He had forged patent assignments.

Manipulated board records.

Used fake consulting companies.

Several executives were implicated.

Others resigned.

Harrison Energy’s stock fell twenty-eight percent.

Ryan resigned as CEO.

The board tried to convince him to stay during the transition.

He refused.

His public statement contained no excuses.

As chief executive, I failed to detect misconduct inside my company and allowed personal judgment to influence professional decisions.

I accept responsibility.

Emily read the statement alone.

Five years earlier, Ryan would have fought to protect his reputation.

Now he surrendered the most important title of his life without bargaining.

He began spending more time in Chicago.

Not in Emily’s house.

Nearby.

He rented a modest property three streets away.

When Ethan asked why he did not buy the giant lakefront mansion listed nearby, Ryan answered.

“Because I’m trying not to be ridiculous.”

Emily laughed.

The boys slowly learned who he was.

Not Ryan.

Not Mommy’s old friend.

Their father.

Ethan reacted first.

“I knew it.”

Lucas cried.

Noah asked one question.

“Are you staying?”

Ryan looked at Emily before answering.

He understood the rules.

“I’m going to try very hard to.”

Noah frowned.

“That’s not yes.”

Ryan swallowed.

“It means I will never leave because I’m angry at your mom.”

Emily looked away.

Ryan continued.

“And if I have to travel, I’ll tell you.”

“And if you’re mad at me, I’ll still come back.”

Noah considered this.

“Okay.”

Then he hugged Ryan.

Emily left the room before anyone saw her cry.

That night Ryan found her on the porch.

“I meant it.”

“I know.”

He sat several feet away.

“Adrian’s attorneys offered a plea.”

“How long?”

“Possibly twelve years.”

Emily nodded.

“What about Melissa?”

“Cooperating.”

“And James?”

“Testifying.”

Silence settled between them.

Ryan looked toward the house.

“I used to think success meant building something nobody could take from me.”

Emily turned toward him.

“And now?”

“I had three sons I didn’t know existed.”

“A woman I loved who stopped trusting me.”

“A company nearly stolen by the person I trusted most.”

Ryan smiled sadly.

“I’m starting to think nothing belongs to us just because we’re powerful enough to hold it.”

Emily studied him.

For the first time, she saw the man she once loved.

Not unchanged.

Changed because he had finally been forced to look at himself.

And that frightened her more than anger ever had.

May you like

Because anger was simple.

Hope was dangerous.
