Chapter 14 - The Line Adrian Should Never Have Crossed
Emily moved the boys immediately.
The school agreed to keep the access request confidential.
It had come through a legal research service tied to one of Adrian’s attorneys.
That was enough.
Ryan’s anger became something Emily had never seen before.
Cold.
Focused.
Controlled.
“He goes near them and I destroy him.”
Emily turned sharply.
“No threats.”
Ryan looked at her.
“I mean legally.”
“Good.”
He took a breath.
“I’m learning.”
Despite herself, Emily smiled.
The boys stayed home for the next several days.
Ryan visited each afternoon.
He built a train set with Lucas.
Helped Noah construct a model of Saturn.
Listened patiently while Ethan asked whether rich people paid taxes.
Emily almost laughed when Ryan looked offended.
“Some of us do.”
Ethan narrowed his eyes.
“Mom says people who say ‘some of us’ are usually hiding something.”
Ryan stared at Emily.
She raised both hands.
“I never said that.”
Ethan grinned.
For a few hours, the danger felt far away.
Then Marcus arrived.
“We found Melissa.”
Emily stood.
“Where?”
“She contacted me.”
Ryan’s expression tightened.
“Is she safe?”
“For now.”
Melissa agreed to meet at a private law office.
When Emily and Ryan entered, Melissa was already crying.
She looked older than Emily remembered.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily remained standing.
“For which part?”
Melissa lowered her head.
“The letter.”
“The phone calls.”
“The fake assistant.”
Ryan stiffened.
“That was you?”
Melissa nodded.
“Adrian told me you had ordered no contact.”
Ryan’s face went white.
“I never said that.”
“I know now.”
Emily sat across from her.
“Tell us everything.”
Melissa wiped her eyes.
“Adrian was moving money years before you discovered it.”
“He used your divorce to remove you from the patent committees.”
Emily nodded.
“What about the pregnancy?”
“He panicked.”
“Why?”
Melissa looked at Ryan.
“Because your grandfather had changed the trust rules.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
Melissa continued.
“Adrian had already borrowed against assets he expected to inherit.”
“How much?”
“Over seventy million dollars.”
Ryan stared.
“If your children were recognized, his collateral vanished.”
Emily felt sick.
Melissa opened her bag.
“I brought proof.”
She removed a flash drive.
“Emails.”
“Bank records.”
“Audio.”
Ryan looked at it.
“Audio of what?”
Melissa met his eyes.
“Adrian admitting he sent you the screenshots.”
The room went silent.
Then Melissa said one final thing.
“He also admitted something else.”
Emily’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
