Chapter 13 - The Heirs

Ryan called his family attorney at six in the morning.
The answer confirmed everything.
Under the Harrison family trust, Ryan controlled forty-two percent of voting shares in Harrison Energy.
If he died without legally recognized descendants, most of those shares passed to Adrian.
If Ryan had children, the shares transferred into trusts for them.
Adrian’s future fortune had vanished the moment the triplets became legally recognized.
Ryan looked toward Emily.
“He has a financial motive now.”
“He had one then.”
“Then?”
“He knew I was pregnant.”
Ryan nodded slowly.
Emily continued.
“Maybe he assumed you would eventually discover the child.”
“Unless he made sure I didn’t.”
Ryan did not answer.
The implication was ugly.
Emily saw it.
“So what happens now?”
“I register the boys with the family trust.”
Emily stiffened.
“No.”
Ryan looked surprised.
“They’re entitled to—”
“I don’t care.”
“Emily.”
“They are children.”
“I know.”
“They are not voting instruments.”
Ryan nodded.
“You’re right.”
She stared at him.
Again, he did not fight.
That was becoming harder to ignore.
Ryan spoke carefully.
“The trust can be structured so nobody accesses anything until they’re adults.”
“And Adrian?”
“Loses his claim immediately.”
Emily walked to the window.
She hated bringing the boys into the conflict.
But they were already in it.
The airport photograph had made sure of that.
“We do it.”
Ryan nodded.
“Privately.”
“Yes.”
That afternoon, the legal acknowledgment was completed.
Ryan Harrison was officially named as father of Ethan, Lucas, and Noah Parker.
Ryan requested no custody change.
No control.
No removal of Parker from their names.
Emily noticed.
He simply signed.
When it was finished, he stared at the certificates.
“I imagined becoming a father differently.”
Emily almost smiled.
“So did I.”
Ryan looked at her.
“Were you scared?”
“Every day.”
“During the pregnancy?”
“Especially then.”
“Why?”
Emily hesitated.
Then she told him.
At twenty-six weeks, Noah’s heart rate had repeatedly dropped.
At twenty-nine weeks, Emily had been hospitalized.
At thirty-two weeks, doctors warned that all three babies might arrive too early.
Ryan listened without interrupting.
When she finished, tears stood in his eyes.
“You went through that alone.”
“My mother was there.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes.”
Ryan turned away.
“I should have been there.”
Emily’s voice became firm.
“You cannot change that.”
“I know.”
“But you can decide what happens next.”
Ryan looked back.
Before he could answer, Emily’s phone rang.
Marcus.
“Melissa never boarded the flight.”
Emily frowned.
“What about Adrian?”
“He didn’t either.”
Ryan stood.
“Where is he?”
Marcus hesitated.
“We don’t know.”

Then he added.
“But someone just accessed the boys’ school records.”
