Chapter 14 - THE BETRAYAL MICHAEL NEVER FORGAVE

We got my mother out.

Vanessa was arrested after Marcus anonymously sent evidence to federal investigators.

Arthur Vale escaped.

Daniel surrendered himself voluntarily.

He gave investigators every record he had.

For the first time in years, he did something that cost him instead of benefiting him.

I did not forgive him.

But I noticed.

Luka disappeared for twelve hours.

When he returned, Sofia was sleeping against my chest.

He stopped several feet away.

He did not ask to hold her.

That mattered.

“Is it true?”

His voice was low.

“The DNA?”

“Yes.”

“We’ll do our own test.”

He nodded.

“If she’s mine…”

His voice broke slightly.

“I will never take her from you.”

I looked at him.

“She was taken from both of us before she was even conceived.”

He closed his eyes.

Then I asked the question Vale had left behind.

“Why did my father disappear?”

Luka went still.

“Elena.”

“Tell me.”

He sat down.

Thirteen years earlier, Michael had returned secretly.

He planned to take my mother and me out of the country.

Luka had helped arrange everything.

But before Michael could reach us, Luka received information that Meridian had placed surveillance on our house.

He changed the meeting location.

Someone intercepted the message.

Meridian arrived first.

Michael escaped.

But he believed Luka had betrayed him.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then who intercepted the message?”

Luka looked toward the window.

“My brother.”

I had never heard him mention a brother.

“His name was Enzo.”

“Was?”

“He died six years ago.”

Luka explained that Enzo had worked with Vale.

Not because he believed in Meridian.

Because Vale had promised to erase Moretti family debts and criminal investigations.

Just like Daniel.

Weak men.

Powerful leverage.

The same pattern again and again.

“Michael disappeared because he thought you betrayed him.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever prove the truth?”

“No.”

My heart hurt for both of them.

Then Luka placed a small metal object on the table.

A USB drive.

“Vale dropped this at the warehouse.”

I plugged it into the laptop.

One video file appeared.

The date was yesterday.

The screen flickered.

Then a man appeared.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Thin.

But I knew his face instantly.

My father.

Michael Hart looked directly into the camera.

“Elena.”

May you like

I stopped breathing.

“If you are seeing this, Arthur Vale finally found me.”
