Chapter 16 - THE CLUE HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

The final DNA envelope was not only paper.

Inside its seal was a microscopic storage strip.

Marcus found it using a document scanner.

The strip contained raw genetic data.

Michael’s data.

Mine.

Sofia’s.

And Luka’s.

For three hours, an independent geneticist compared the sequences.

When she finally looked up, my hands were shaking.

“Daniel Reed is not Sofia’s biological father.”

I already knew that much.

She continued.

“Luka Moretti is.”

Luka closed his eyes.

The geneticist looked at me.

“There is no ambiguity.”

I looked down at Sofia.

Her tiny fingers were wrapped around mine.

The stranger who had promised never to leave a child unprotected was her father.

Not by choice.

Not by consent.

But by biology.

Luka sat beside me.

“I don’t know what I’m allowed to feel.”

“Neither do I.”

We stayed that way for a long time.

Then the geneticist pointed to another result.

“There’s something else.”

My biological relationship to Michael Hart was confirmed.

He was my father.

But Michael did not carry the M-17 marker.

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

She shook her head.

“The marker came from your mother.”

My mother went pale.

“No.”

The geneticist turned the screen.

Claire Hart carried a dormant M-series variant.

That meant Meridian had lied about the origin of the entire program.

Vittorio Moretti had not been the unique source.

Neither had Michael.

M-17 was not one person.

It was a classification.

Vale had hidden that fact to control the Morettis and the Harts.

“What makes Sofia special?”

The geneticist hesitated.

“She inherited compatible variants from both family lines.”

“Does that make her sick?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“It may make her resistant to the neurological disease Meridian was originally trying to treat.”

I almost laughed from relief.

My daughter was not a weapon.

She was not an experiment.

She was healthy.

Whatever future medical significance existed belonged to her.

No one else.

Marcus entered the room.

“We found Michael.”

I stood.

“How?”

“The storage strip contained coordinates.”

Luka looked at the map.

An old private clinic in upstate New York.

My mother whispered.

“Meridian’s first facility.”

Then Marcus showed us something else.

Satellite photographs.

Three vehicles had arrived within the last hour.

One belonged to Arthur Vale.

Another belonged to a federal agent assigned to Vanessa’s transfer.

The traitor.

I looked at Luka.

“We go now.”

He nodded.

“No more running.”

I picked up Sofia and kissed her forehead.

For the first time since the hospital, I knew exactly what I wanted.

My daughter would grow up knowing the truth.

May you like

My father would come home.

And Arthur Vale would finally learn what happened when the people he treated like pieces on a board stopped obeying him.
